to make positive changes you have to be in it for the long haul.

it'll happen one of these days.

:( I hate that! :(

It seems like we take one step forward and two steps back! I just don't get people... are the flippin' right-winged, rednecks that powerful in this country or are they just ignorant? We don't want special treatment... just EQUAL RIGHTS!!

*sigh* :(

So where were all the no on proposition 2 threads on JUB?

The only good thing about this is that it will also be bad for other couples (seniors for example) that don't want to get married because of SS benefit payments and other rights. Health insurance, hospital visitation in Florida could be jeopardized if you are not legally married, and there are a lot of couples in Florida that are not. This will turn the tide and get this overturned eventually, but as far as how long that will take, that's up for grabs.

:( Vanti we can't get married.......

but we can still screw so thats good.

I know.

It royally *sucks*. :(

As thrilled as I am about Obama, I have to deal with the fact that 'Prop 2' lost by a *huge* 2 to 1 margin.

As a Florida boy, let me try to explain....

Florida is a really odd state. If it was up to our coastal city's to defeat amendment two, then I suspect victory would have been ours...

But.

Think if it this way: Florida is a 'red state' with a blue border. As progressive as the cities by the water may be, drive 25 miles inland and you might as well be in rural Alabama.

Those folks don't give a lick about anything that has happened since the 50's, and they sure as hell aren't going to let those 'homo's' marry. It's beyond their comprehension.

So, our prop 2 fails. The Floridian ignorence continues...

And tomorrow is another day

St. Augustine is on the coast. It's like living in rural Alabama. #-o

Again.

One word.

Canada.

I got this email today. While I am upset that it passed, I hope the campaigning from Yes on 2 that insisted nothing would happen to anyones benefits will be enforced. If this is the case, then they really didnt gain anything since we already cant marry in Florida. If someone tries to sue to take away benefits, its good to see that Equality Florida will hold Yes on 2 to their campaign words and promises. Now what we have to do is regroup and figure out what we need to do to get this overturned and marriage legal in Florida.

Dear XXXXXX,

We wish the news were better.

The results are in and, although the race is very close, it appears certain that Amendment 2 has passed.

While 62.2% of Floridians voted to add this language to the constitution, there is a silver lining to this fight.

There has never been stronger support for Domestic Partnership and Civil Unions than today in Florida. Every single poll has shown a broad and growing majority of Floridians believe in providing vital protections to unmarried couples.

We have built a strong coalition like never before. Our allies not only said NO to Amendment 2, they rallied and canvassed and phone banked and stood shoulder to shoulder in the field with us.

Thank you for your incredible commitment to the Fairness For All Families' Vote No On 2 Campaign. We may have lost this battle, but our state is moving toward fairness.

The extremists behind amendment 2 insisted over-and-over that it would have no effect on protections for unmarried couples. We'll hold them to their word and fight tooth-and-nail to ensure not one single person loses their health care or other vital protections because of this discriminatory amendment.

Over the past three years, the Fairness for All Families / Vote No On 2 Campaign has forged a powerful coalition of over 260 organizations representing millions of Floridians. And the most important part of our coalition is you. Especially now, we're going to need your continued participation in the struggle for justice and equality in Florida.

We are deeply disappointed tonight, but we will never give up. We'll keep fighting until every family in our state has the same benefits and protections. Thank you for standing with us.

Sincerely,
Nadine Smith
Executive Director, Equality Florida
Co-Chair, Fairness for All Families' Vote No On 2 Campaign
