Dance Classics

Behind the Mask - Greg Phillinganes

===========================================

MJ made a version . . .

Behind the Mask - Michael Jackson

Meet the Two Tons O' Fun - BEFORE they changed their name to The Weather Girls.

In this incarnation, as Two Tons O' Fun, they were Sylvester's backup singers. On his album, "Living Proof," recorded at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House,(1978) he proclaimed during a break in singing- pointing to the Two Tons O' Fun - "These girls don't need no jewery (Jewelry). These girls don't need no dresses. THESE GIRLS CAN SING!!!!!"
Yes, they can. This is the best mix, by Robbie Leslie, one of my contemporaries, at the height of disco fever. (We called the Summer of '78 "the Sumer of (gay) Freedom.") It was 5 months before Harvey Milk was assassinated, and we had just defeated the Briggs Initiative in California (a vile piece of legislation: every gay man and woman should know about this). https://www.glbthistory.org/briggs

It was our FIRST major victory in gay rights ), and pushed Anita Bryant to the wall. We thought we could do anything. Five months later, Harvey Milk was assassinated. 32 months later, AIDS arrived. But for the moment, when this came out in May 1978, after those triumphs, we thought we were invincible. We thought Earth Could be Just Like Heaven

This rocked. And it was so different than other disco when it came out. Even charted very well on the Billboard Pop Charts.

Followed shortly afterwards by the sound-alike "Dance Fantasy," by Free Life

The drop dead disco version of You Keep Me Hangin' On - with Luther Vandross and Jocelyn Brown singing the leads.

McBrion,
Ive noticed Ive been vibe-ing with you, ie: Peter Brown

I meant to post Risk Astley songs because he was a big part of the dance genre. I hate the Rick Rolled thing.

Whenever You Need Somebody - Rick Astley

Destiny's Child - Bootylicious

Chaka Khan & Rufus - Do You Love What You Feel

m1thousand, yes, Peter Brown was one of the artists that most people don't know by name, but know one or two of his songs. "Do You Want to Get Funky With Me?" rocketed into the Billboard's Top 20 on the Hot 100 charts. It peaked at #18. The next song, "Dance With Me," went Top Ten (#8).

The former was released in 1977 (a slinky, funky rhythm) and the latter in 1978.

Then this one, one of my favorites.

And this one, one of my favorites from Peter Brown! This is the actual single "Fantasy Love Affair"! More of a rock dance single!

Oh Yeah - Yellow

Salsoul Records (The Soul Train Theme's orchestral backing: Vince Montana) A minor classic, only known to the most serious dance clubs with a (mainly) Black/Hispanic clientele...
