Considering how outspoken he has been about homophobia this is hard to believe. I wonder if it is someone who is trying to make $.02 off of someone famous. Obviously I don't know Hayes but I would like to think it is not true.

Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes arrested over 'racist attack'

Darren Hayes

Former Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes has been arrested in London for an alleged racist attack against a waiter.
The Sydney Morning Herald today reported the singer was questioned by police on Friday after he allegedly abused a member of staff at Busaba Eathai Thai restaurant in London on July 22.
Hayes was released on bail and has since refused to comment. Haye's solicitor said in a statement the singer was 'deeply upset at the allegation which he strenuously denies'.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We can confirm that a 35-year-old man was arrested by Westminster police on suspicion of racially abusing a member of staff.
"He was arrested after voluntarily attending a Central London police station by appointment. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries, until the 21st of September.

Probably just another bullshit overreaction by the PC fascists in good old 1984topia. Considering the things that can get you branded a racist in England, I prefer to take this story with a large bucket of salt.

Yeah this is London England we're talking about here. You cannot refer to people of a certain minority these days (even if you're not meaning to be offensive) without the politically correct police telling you you're a racist thug who deserves to be locked up in our overcrowded prisons along with the rest of societies scumbags.

I don't believe Darren even said anything TO upset the PC police. He wouldn't do that. As was said in the statement on his MySpace blog, it goes against everything he's ever stood for.

This is someone trying to make some money.

I would like to think it is not true too.
But the gendarmes in the UK do not fabricate stuff easily.
Indeed, I have encountered some rough forms of bigotry and
racist remarks here at JUB in the last several weeks.
It is possible, especially if he felt offended about some thing
after an already difficult day.

If that were true, though, I really believe that Darren would have just admitted it. "Yeah, I got pissed and said some things I regret." The issue would be forgotten. The fact that he's emphatically denying it tells me that it's not true.

I wouldn't discount it- have you guys ever lived in South-East Queensland, where he grew up?

So what? It is your democratic right to be racist. This is where I wish we had US style laws of free speech.
Keep up. We're discussing the veracity of the claims against Hayes, not your "right to be racist".

Maybe we should wait until the facts come out before handing down our sentences.

Or are celebrity lawsuits like American Idol, where we all pick which side we're for, and root root root until it's over...at which point we then bitch that the whole thing is fixed, and the wrong verdict came down, and we're still sticking with our side?

Well said! Just because he's a celebrity that appeals to some does not mean that he is still pristine in that situation. What was said in the first place? And if he did say something racist then no, we should not 'forget' about it. That's not cool. Should we just 'forget' about it when someone makes a homophobic remark just because they make a statement regarding it?
If racist acts and words are still being thrown that just goes to show that prejudice is something that we all need to work on.

And looking at some of the answers here, it almost seems as if a PC Fascist in good old utopia 1984 is necessary. That just because he's pretty and anti-homophobia doesn't give him a right to react in a prejudiced manner himself. If this is real.

The answers here so far remind me of the answers republicans had when defending Ann Coulter after using the word 'faggot' to describe Edwards. What she somehow has that right to use that word because she has gay friends? Come on. Or for Tim Hardaway's comment's?

Maybe then gay people should develop thicker skin when homophiba is used against us.

So what? It is your democratic right to be racist. This is where I wish we had US style laws of free speech.

Well you are in Australia.. so I'm not surprised that you made that statement and I wouldn't be surprised if you are racist. Infact you probably are racist.

Yes we have free speech, but attempt to make racial marks or threats on your job or on the public airwaves, and we will see were your ass will end up at. Yes, its your democratic right to be UNEMPLOYED.

Wow, a guy from australia, and a white guy from south Africa don't care if their favorite celebrity is racist. I am dumbfounded.

Well, he's certainly not the first racist homosexual...there's a long history of racism in the homo community.

Maybe then gay people should develop thicker skin when homophiba is used against us.

i agree 100%. Like I said in the other thread - if it were about a guy making a homophobic comment, the reaction would be completely different.

But when it's an (alleged) racist remark, people take it so lightly

why the double standard?

He's not obviously innocent because he's GAY.
He's obviously innocent because he's CUTE!
Why isn't this obvious to everybody? :)

Lex

can you compare this reaction to to the "why are you gay, i saw you sucking on some D-I-C-K" thread?

He's obviously innocent because it isn't something he would do based on his history of fighting for the side of acceptance. It goes against everything he's ever stood for. He denies it ever happened.

That's why he's obviously innocent.
