President Obama’s pick for secretary of health and human services, Tom Daschle, filed amended tax returns and paid more than $100,000 in back taxes on Jan. 2, administration officials said on Friday.

Mr. Daschle concluded that he owed the taxes for free use of a car and driver that had been provided to him by Leo Hindery Jr., the founder of a private equity firm known as InterMedia Advisors, the officials said.

Not at all. Someone appointed to high office should be above reproach which, clearly, he is not.

I support Capitalism. I pay my car loan & credit card ,utilities when they are due and my TAXES.

So when someones in office and they dont pay taxes its alright, no biggy. but if i dont pay then i get fucked in the ass. (which i like, but you know what i mean...)

Being aware that you owe taxes on the free use of a car isn't common. It may just be that he had someone check his records, and it caught him by surprise.

I borrowed some equipment for a job I did once, and didn't find out until the next year that it counted as "income" -- and I only caught that because Turbo tax caught it retroactively.

There is no way to know that. Maybe, maybe not. He definately would not be the first and will not be the last POLITICIAN to cheat the system. Notice I did not say republican or democrat, because *BOTH* do it.

^^ i suppose if like kulindahr said, that sometimes use of free items isnt known as income then i guess that would be understandable but i guess we'll never know since our government seems so corrupt. (yes even with the new obama administration)

he might not have known all of what he had to pay but it was probably just a mistake. i know that i wouldnt ever think a free ride would count as income. i would totally pass that if i wasnt using some pc program tax help, which i dont.

It gets crazy.

If I borrow a truck, it counts as income, but I get to take mileage or gas.
If I rent a truck, that's an expense, and I still get to take mileage.
So if I have to do something like that in the future, and know where to borrow one, I "rent" it for dirt....
