DC City Council votes to legalize gay marriage

DC_1.jpg

Mayor Adrian Fenty has promised to sign the bill, which passed 11-2, and gay couples could begin marrying as early as March. Congress, which has final say over Washington's laws, could reject it, but Democratic leaders have suggested they are reluctant to do so.
The bill had overwhelming support among council members and was expected to pass, though opponents have vowed to try to get Congress or voters to overturn it.

Once the Mayor signs the bill, it will go to Congress for a 30-day review. Congress could vote to overturn it. Let's hope Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Reid won't even let the bill come to the floor for a vote.

Razorz, they are just filthy liars and it's easy to prove it. They claim to support state's rights, but don't when they don't like what the states decide, they claim to want smaller government but want government to infringe on the most personal choices.

They're just liars, and trying to understand them is a one-way ticket to a headache.

Even if the Congress lets it go into effect (which I think they will) there's going to be a lengthy court battle supported by NOM to force a public referendum.

Yep. I would be surprised if this legislation wasn't overturned. Gays getting married in DC? Republicans will be shitting kittens.

It’s not truly shitting them. They were just using them for kinky sex.

Big step forward in equality in the nations capital.

Just as an aside:
Congress because the Congress of the Confederation probably never imagined such a population ever existing. At the time New York was the largest city but with only 33,000 people in the first census of 1790!
Are you sure? I thought it was Philadelphia, then Boston, then New York. If I recall, New York didn't become the biggest city until the Erie Canal opened its port to the interior.

Still, good for DC. I haven't been there in ages; how's Fenty doing otherwise?
