What exactly does this do to my computer? My friend said he de-fragments his computer every 3 months. I didnt bother asking.
PLEASE READ: To register, turn off your VPN (iPhone users- disable iCloud); you can re-enable the VPN after registration. You must maintain an active email address on your account: disposable email addresses cannot be used to register.
It's not completely harmless insofar as there's a kinda cost/benefit analysis involved in it. If you use your hard drive normally there's an expected meantime to failure (MTF) - leaving your hard drive as is has one value and defragging it may have another value. It's important not to defrag too often. The built-in Windows defrag isn't very good but a good defrag app will tell you after an analysis of the drive whether or not you need to defrag. You can get trail versions of most defrag apps so you can kinda do the rounds so to speak.![]()
Ideally, how often should one defrag; using something like UltimateDefrag, for example? It's important not to defrag too often.
Ah - you did an edit
Give us some details - what are you running (XP?) and what are you running it on (make/model)?
Can you uninstall some apps?

edit: Oh and congrats on the new job
You don't seem to have that much installed but according to the specs that laptop came with a 60gig hard drive. I know Adobe is a massive application and if you have plugins/brushes etc. then it can take a couple of gig on you. My guess is that you've got all of your Windows updates taking up a lot of room. You know this by looking in your C:Windows\ folder and you'll see blue folders that start with a $ sign (you might have to switch on show all folders/files). There's an excellent little app called XPLite that will scour your hard drive and clean those folders off. I wouldn't recommend using any of its other facilities as you could destroy your system if you don't know what you're doing.
Of course you probably have movies and music on your hard drive that take up a lot of space and then there's the hidden Dell rescue partition that takes around 3gig.
