What exactly does this do to my computer? My friend said he de-fragments his computer every 3 months. I didnt bother asking.

its a great q and i beleive its good and should be done montly its also harmless to your computer

Hm,well I've had this laptop for atleast a year and a half,I think i'll get right on that. Thankyou

Edit: I cant,I only have 2% free space. What should I do? System restore? I've ran the system clean up 2 times today. Any ideas?

It's not completely harmless insofar as there's a kinda cost/benefit analysis involved in it. If you use your hard drive normally there's an expected meantime to failure (MTF) - leaving your hard drive as is has one value and defragging it may have another value. It's important not to defrag too often. The built-in Windows defrag isn't very good but a good defrag app will tell you after an analysis of the drive whether or not you need to defrag. You can get trail versions of most defrag apps so you can kinda do the rounds so to speak. ;)

I sure would like to try it,but im a little low on Mb [ see post before your post ]

Ah - you did an edit :)

Give us some details - what are you running (XP?) and what are you running it on (make/model)?

Can you uninstall some apps?

Okay,Windows xp service pack 2, Dell inspiron 1300. Heres a picture of whats on my computer:

If you wanna see the rest let me know.

Does anyone read PCFormat here? Luis did a really great article on the benefits of defragging (and anti virus) in one of the issues. He did an experiment and timed how long it took to defrag and then the actual speed increase in booting up. I think it would of taken like several years to save the amount of time you spent defragging in the first place.

I will try and find the article.

I think there is an inherent danger in defragging. If the power goes off you could lose files. It's a good idea to back up the drive before defragging just in case.

OSX apparently doesn't need to be done but I have a defragging tool and did it anyway. It didn't make any difference.

Great question and even greater responses. One of the best things about the JUB family, other than the obvious, is the way many of us can communicate our thoughts, suggestions and solutions to problems in other areas besides sex.;)

As for me, I always feel my computer has seems to run a little better after I
de-frag.

I find Luis' section just hilarious, it makes a nice change to the usual Q&A you get where they just answer the question. Even if some of the things he says are incorrect it's still a good read. :p

edit: Oh and congrats on the new job

Cheers :-)

I do enjoy the work but I think they are taking advantage of me because of my age and not paying me what they should be. But at the end of the day it's the experience I will get from it that counts I guess.

You don't seem to have that much installed but according to the specs that laptop came with a 60gig hard drive. I know Adobe is a massive application and if you have plugins/brushes etc. then it can take a couple of gig on you. My guess is that you've got all of your Windows updates taking up a lot of room. You know this by looking in your C:Windows\ folder and you'll see blue folders that start with a $ sign (you might have to switch on show all folders/files). There's an excellent little app called XPLite that will scour your hard drive and clean those folders off. I wouldn't recommend using any of its other facilities as you could destroy your system if you don't know what you're doing. :D

Of course you probably have movies and music on your hard drive that take up a lot of space and then there's the hidden Dell rescue partition that takes around 3gig.

I installed it and have not a clue of what to do,wanna guide me though it? You said if you dont know what you're doing I could destroy my system,I dont want that.
