Death to Pennies???

I was in Italy as a kid when every coin was worth much more as metal than its face value as money. The smallest paper note was 5 lire. Coins disappeared and change was given in pieces of candy or stamps.

Italy survived, more or less. The US wouldn't miss the penny.
 
I don't think the penny would be missed one bit.
