When grouping pictures, how far apart should each frame be? I have about 20 frames to hang. Is there a rule of thumb?

No. Lay it out on the floor till you like what it looks like. Then transfer the measurements onto the wall with painters tape.

If the pictures are eclectic then an informal grouping will be fine.

There's no rule of thumb. It's down to personal taste and what (in the context of the individual pictures and the room overall) looks right.

I'm not aware of any rule of thumb. The only thing I can think of is, if your pictures are small, you could probably put them close together, or even place them above and below each other besides next to each other, but if they are large, that would demand a greater spacing between them.

I can't get past 20 holes in the wall.

Will the cost of repairs come out of your deposit?

I have lived here almost 20 years. I have put way more than 20 nails in the wall already. I am allowed to hang pictures. I am not making hole just to make holes.

Each frame is over 14" in at least one direction. They are kind of large.

Then if they are that large pair down to 5 it will look way better and less cluttered!

Just hang them in any way that you find personally pleasing.

If you live alone, anyone else's opinion is utterly irrelevant.
