I'm considering breaking contract with my current provider and switching to AT&T and the iPhone.

Currently, I have Sprint (through Credo Mobile) and the Blackberry Curve. It's driving me nuts. Not too happy.

But I have a LOT of questions before I do this...

So I need your input.

For current AT&T customers, how would you rate your service on a scale of pounding headache to fucked up the ass with a spiked piano leg, no lube?

For those who have used both Blackberries and iPhones, what are the main differences, good and bad?

All feedback welcome.

I miss a phone being plugged into a wall sometimes. But it's just not feasible anymore.

Where do you live?

It depends on where you live. If you live in a major city and you have or know people that say they get a good call quality from ATT them maybe you should switch over. If you live in a small rural town I would say forget it.

You can check here for a map of ATT service here or you can check ATT website.
And I have an iphone 3gs and I love it. I get full bars on 3g wherever I go,
Never had a blackberry so I can't comment

I'm in Canada so no direct comparison. My iPhone is on the Rogers/Fido network, which was the only network with the technology to support it at the time.

The network sucks ass. Dirty, crusty ass that also needs some kind of antibiotic.

I can watch other people on other networks just hang on to their phone calls in places like train tunnels, when mine just sits there looking gorgeous.

However in the last month, I have a choice of networks as the competition, Bell, just rolled out a new 3G network. Hopefully that will make a difference in 18 months when my contract is up.

Anyway, even though I hate the network a lot, the iPhone is still the single most useful purchase I have ever made.

It paid for itself in the first month in cost savings when I was able to comparison shop for a new TV I was buying. (Yes, I know I could have researched that on the net first, but having it in my pocket was the ultimate in useful convenience). I use it for everything.

PS if you want old-school phone, try this:

Sure - as always apple beats the competition ..

AT&T's service sort of sucks if you don't live in a major city (Los Angeles), which is why you'll hear people in LA say that their service is solid. Plus I consider the iPhone to being overrated and there are plenty of good phones out there.

Friend has Verizon and he seems to get a better signal than I do. While I'm trying to find a signal to send text messages he's getting them all the time and sending them without any issues. Same issue with the Internet, some times it works and other times it doesn't.

Oh no! My iPhone is missing out on "changeable memory cards." Also I don't have an 8-track slot on my iPhone! Oh NO!

This is the way I feel also with ATT.

The AT&T network is pure crap. Even in major cities (Atlanta here) there is no guarantee you are going to get an acceptable service level.

At the place I used to live I had dropped calls all the time, but I recently moved and at my current place it's great.

That said, the iphone is a lifestyle changing device. The interface is by far the best on any phone. Having the real internet available anywhere is great. Having google maps anywhere is great. I know other phones have this too but the integration on the iphone is the best. Example: you can search for the name of a restaurant, and google will return a clickable link to the address that opens in the maps application.

The number of apps/functions available for it is far superior in number and quality to any other phone, and there's just so much use available for anything you need. I use a great mobile finance app to track my purchases on the go and sync with my desktop accounting software. I use a project management app for my work that helps he keep track of my tasks easier. etc etc

Also, the fact that it's an ipod in the same device is great and eliminates the need for a portable music player as a second device.

I had a Palm PDA back in the day. That didn't work for me on any level and I sold it. The iphone works for me as a phone (most of the time lol), a portable internet device, a music player, a game player, a PDA, an alarm clock, and more.

Mens' Health magazine rated about 8 different smartphones recently - the Blackberries came in 1st and 3rd; HTC had 2 in the top 5 from their Touch/Diamond range, SonyEricsson's eXperia X1 came in 5th and a Samsung in 6th (I can't remember whether it was the Jet or the Star).

The iPhone 3g came in 7th, only just above LG's ks360 entry-level one aimed at the youth market.

I have never had a Blackberry and I switched from Verizon to AT&T just for the iPhone, after a lot of debating. I am happy I made the switch despite the iffy service as far as a good cell signal in certain areas.

The things that I like about having an iPhone and having a Mac computer:

If you sign up for the yearly Mobile Me service for $100 bucks you get all your email, contacts and calendar information stored on one server that will talk to all your devices. Which essentially means that when I look up a phone number on my iPhone it is also on my iMac and my MacBookPro.

Also if I change an address, phone number or appointment date on my computer or iPhone everything is updated across the board. I don't have to wait to plug in the phone before it syncs.

Apps for everything under the sun. Every, single, thing. If you have an addiction to bubblewrap popping, there's an app for that. No lie.

Anyway I am happy with the decision to go with the iPhone despite the AT&T switch. It's been a lot less stressful than I had imagined.

MobileMe works for pc as well

Also with mobile me, if you lose your phone you can have it send its location, display a "please return this phone to...." message, beep so you can find it in a snowdrift, or if you're concerned about privacy you can remote delete everything.

The syncing is really nice too, now that you mention it.

I have AT&T. The network drops a lot of calls, but has service nearly everywhere I need it.

you pay a 100 bucks for that?

my shitty 4 year old mobile does that for free ..

But here are the main uses of my phone right now:

Checking and sending email
Calender
Facebook
Web (basic stuff, nothing fancy)

An iPhone will handle all of those needs and then some. Couple that with the mac synchronization and you're all set.

I've had an iPhone since day 1. And while I am occasionally frustrated by the AT&T Data network, I've never considered leaving.

Ever since we switched to Verizon, no problems.

All the others have dropped calls occasionally or poor signal strength if not out in a broad empty flat field somewhere.

We don't live in that kind of a world, Thelma!

well, maybe they do in...Kansas

Funny, I am about to get rid of this slow, crashing, hot ass mess (the iphone) for a blackberry 9700.

I have a 3g the 3gs are beautiful.

I just need a change from this damn Iphone. Apple has done enough in my life, here I come Zune.

You should get the iphone, it is honestly a great phone. There are problems with everything but you will enjoy the hell out of it.

i have at&t myself but i don't have an iphone (yet). as long as i'm in a big city i get good reception but i noticed over the holidays when i went to visit the fam out in the country... well, i never got 3g service at all. most of the time all i could get was "edge" and at times nothing at all.

I have an unlocked 2G iPhone when I am in USA I use TMobile with no problems.

I was in Singapore 2 days ago and bought a Blackberry 9000 = so far I do not like it.

I am back in Thailand and would guess within the next few days I buy a 3GS iphone.

If you want it for personal use you can not beat a iPhone (IMO), for work the Blackberry would be ok, it was great in Singapore for SMS although I like the touchscreen on a Apple.

All of that said I am not an Apple fan nor ATT fan if you can get an unlocked phone again IMO it is better choice.

If you do go for one, make sure you get the 3Gs. It's so much fucking better than the original 3G model.

I absolutely love my iPhone; couldn't live without it.. Phone, text, Photo/video camera, mail, internet, Facebook, iPod, etc etc etc..

It's fucking RAD!!! I could go on about it for days, haha!!!
