  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

Defecting to the dark side...the iPhone.

I've got a few friends with them, and they are happy as mentioned with the exception of the network. Also lots of apps--here's an instructional video :)

Someday I'm gonna get one but not just now. Cash flow is an issue.

The hand grenade part killed me. :rotflmao:

I thought it might. :D

Sold yet?

One other thing, you can actually use it as a boarding pass when flying Delta/Northworst which I know is the dominant carrier in your town...

One of my friends travels a LOT and he thinks it is pretty cool.

I love the fact that wherever I am, I can get online because of the FREE 3G network! Unlimited, too.. ..| ;)

*contains self*

I've used a Palm PDA before and I loved the device to death. But I've always had AT&T. I've known people to have T-Mobile and Verizon though. In High school they always bragged about getting reception everywhere in the school and texting through detention and blah blah blah.

With what people say about the iPhone being a life-changing phone is true. But to a certain extent I think most smart phones are like that. The iPhone just has an odd effect on people. It sounds basic with just having internet, email, maps, iPod, and a camera. But it so much fucking more than that. But for the basic applications that it comes with just that is amazing. Before the App Store came out people were still enjoying their iPhone as was I.

I never had problems with 2G. I'm not going to lie though. The first months of 3G was hell.

Dropped calls everywhere and almost no reception. The solution was simple. TURNING OFF 3G. It sounds odd that the whole purpose of the iPhone 3G was for the actual 3G network. But it couldn't be helped people overloaded AT&T's network. I know many places where it does work now. It's not NEARLY as bad as it was 2 years ago. Or maybe a year ago.

The iPhone does have it's flaws as well. The glitches in the software have dissapeared though thanks to firmware updates. But the fact that you can't do word or pages documents in the phone or transfer them to the phone. Well there might be an app for that. The fact that you can't add more memory via memory card, there isn't an external battery and..that's really it.

It used to be no MMS, No video, No Apps, Could be faster, and so forth. But with each Firmware update such as the app store, in app purchases, and new models of the iPhone the iPhone has continued to evolve and slowly but surely remove most of the cons that people have.

I know someone who fucking hates Apple. He finally got an iPhone recently. He still says he'll never use a mac but people at work convinced him. And there are SO MANY people who have iPhone. Students, Kids, Parents, Workers, Families, and so forth. Not everyone understands the apps and gets frustrated with it and not everyone uses the iPhone for the same reasons as others. Some use it for games, music, business, or just as a phone.

The reality is there is so much more to the iPhone than people realize and while it's their choice to not explore the apps they are missing out on alot.

And..there is also jailbreak. But I won't get into that. But that does open up another door.

I am not too crazy about AT&T's service. I was pissed off that AT&T delayed MMS for so damn long and they STILL haven't given us teethering. However, AT&T's contract is rumored to end with apple soon.

Even if people don't like the iPhone they have set such a standard for other phones that other phones cannot compete without having apps, email, internet, music, maps, and some internet tv or youtube.

This is THE BASIC STANDARD FOR PHONES NOW. I try to explain this to people who don't like the iPhone or Apple because you don't have to like apple but understand that they push others and create competition which ultimately is good for us.

Recently though AT&T customer service has really impressed me.

I have a feeling that 2010 will come with a few changes for the iPhone and the other phone carriers. It used to be rumored that Verizon was going to get the iPhone but with Verizon being hellbent on destroying AT&T (Possibly doing this to let apple realize AT&T sucks and to join with them) it doesn't seem like that will happen now.

But as someone else pointed out you can always unlock your phone. Although it's BEST to do that on a mac. But I won't get into unlocking/jailbreaking.

I love my iPhone and couldn't live without it. It's so, so, so easy to use...all my contacts and data are backed up on my computer, the apps make interfacing with facebook, twitter, myspace et al easy as you can get...awesome. I live out in buttfuck nowhere and get great service, so...

MMS is like sending a Picture message/song in a text message; Multimedia Messaging Service.

You don't need to worry about unlocking or jailbreaking; It's for people that don't want to pay for a real service.. And wont be able to get any Apple updates/upgrades if they do.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jailbreak_(iPhone_OS)

Once your contract ends, the phone unlocks itself anyway!

For £35 ($57 US) a month I get 500 texts, 600 minutes, and unlimited internet/3G use.. Perfect, for me!

If you get one, promise me you'll take a provocative photo and post it on guyswithiphones.com.

Pretty please?

I'd rather not get into this but I don't want you to mislead people.

Jailbreaking isn't only for people who don't want to pay for service. That's what unlocking is. There are people who jailbreak and remain with their contract. The main reason for jailbreaking is customization, doing things that apple/AT&T would never let you do and truly taking control of the iPhone and turning it into your device and not apple's device. And that's why apple is hellbent on claiming jailbreaking is evil. They are control freaks but they have reason to be that way. I don't jailbreak but I know people who do and the applications that people do or more like the things they uncover about the iPhone is amazing. Before Apple/AT&T allowed GPS Apps into the App Store there was one already for jailbreak.

Also with the recent brutality and very biased and flawed app store approval process I am not surprised that more people are jailbreaking. Apple really needs to fix the way the apps get approved because they have declined some great ones and generally for bullshit reasons but not always. The only reason why I am saying this is because I don't want people to think that people who jailbreak are bad and that they are thieves. Yes jailbreaking does unlock the door to do things such as filesharing and downloading apps for free on the iPhone. But not everyone does that.

And the last thing I wanted to say that was wrong is that with every firmware update apples comes out with there is a way to upgrade to the next firmware and keep the jailbreak or re-installing it. It's kinda funny sometimes because often a new firmware is "PWNED" in less than 5 hours.

Again I don't jailbreak but I think that those developers who support jailbreaking and sometimes modding are very creative people who allow devices to do things they were originally not intended to do or were meant to keep hidden.

Now back on topic...

That's why I put "unlocking or jailbreaking", and then a link as to what exactly jailbreaking was (via Wiki).. ^

I love my iPhone and it's made me thousands considering the amount of still pics I've taken with it for my blog... the fact that there's a Wordpress blog that allows me to blog from where ever I am, there's aps for just about anything... I've also taken a few composite pictures using photo aps that look amazing.. one of which is on my wall, one of which is going in my book.

I've taken video for cocksure men with it. The video quality is that good.

It does everything from GPS to a good To Do List, video player, camera, internet surfer... all the BS you hear from people about how it's a piece of shit is just confusing.

OK, I'm Amish when it comes to cell phones ... my current one doesn't even have a camera.

All I want to know is...

... can you JUB from an iPhone? :gogirl:

Yes, you can..

I don't know enough about other carrier to say if AT&T is better or worse.

I only know I've never know anyone who didn't complain about whatever their carrier is.

I just got a Droid on Verizon and I'm very happy with it. Great coverage, has all the email, contacts, and calendar stuff being stored on Google servers (for free, no less) has third party apps, can run multiple programs/tasks at once, 16Gig of storage for music or other files. I highly recommend it.

Edit: Mac users will probably find the iPhone more useful because it connects well with all their stuff. If you use iTunes than you'll prefer the iPhone. I don't use any Apple product and don't really plan to, so this is not a negative for me.

I hope you don't mind me trying to respond. The sarcastic tone of your post begs counterargument.
I pay $100 to have server space so that I can share files with friends who are also on the network whenever I want to, or more importantly so that if I am working on a file that I want to send myself and do not have a thumb drive, I can plop it on my MobileMe server and access it from home.
For $30-$40 a year you can buy cheap web hosting where you can upload and download whatever you want, from any computer on the internet. If you keep your home computer on all day (as I'm guessing you might, given the next line) you can run a server for free from home.

I pay $100 to have access to my Mac at any given moment on any Mac anywhere I am.
Many Linux versions come prebuilt with remote access, for free. There are also plenty of programs like VNC that do this for free on multiple operating systems.

I pay $100 to be able to access those same files from my iPhone.
Any internet enabled device, including a smartphone, can get any file from the internet. Using a simple server like the first paragraph this can easily be accomplished.

I pay $100 so that if my iPhone and all its contents are lost somewhere in the city I can remotely erase the contents and locate the phone with the touch of a button.
I concede this one. I can see that being pretty useful. If your stuff gets stolen it would be nice to be able to deactivate it remotely.

Pardon me for enjoying the fact that in the 3+ years I have owned a Mac and the 2+ years I have owned an iPhone I have never once had to go apeshit crazy deleting files and cleaning up shit that got on it because my PC likes Trojans more than a dick does :p

I don't mind spending money on things that actually work and I don't mind it being something that I am 98% sure is not going to send me a virus from the "free server space!"
In the 5+ years I have been using Linux I have never had to pay for any software or software upgrade and have never had to deal with any Trojans or viruses.

I think the real issue here is usability, not stability. Mac users appreciate that their system is easy to use and "just works." I respect that feeling and, although I disagree, I can understand why some people might feel that Linux is too risky or unfriendly for them. I am not a true Linux zealot (I admit there are plenty of problems that would deter users) but on the specific issue of stability vs. cost I have to disagree.

A bit of secondhand knowledge about the MobileMe service. (I use it too and just got done paying for the next year...)

My Tech Guru Friend, who actually is an IT Guy for a major American Company was helping me update my software and he was checking around checked out my email (I'd been having a few problems...user related ).

Two weeks later I got an email from him informing me his email had changed to me.com. Next time we got together he told me that he discovered that the email service with MobileMe was so very secure, he convinced his employer to switch everyone, including himself, to the service. I'm not exactly sure what he does, but because I'm a friend of his, the Air Force sent an investigator to my house last summer, and my neighbors for a routine check...and we live 40 miles apart. They even went to talk to my Mom (who lives 1500 miles away) to see if I'd told her what he does.

So if my friend thinks the MobileMe service is worth it, I believe him. If I didn't, I think he has the ability to Nuke my House. :D

oh yeah jailbreaking is great for apps like iBlacklist.

After jailbreaking, I'll never go back to official.

From what i've heard about the i-phone, the phone functionality itself sucks, but everything else is awesome.

Yup. It was voted on CNET or something that the iPhone is the worst phone ever. Not the device. But the phone application itself. I won't say it's the worst. But it could be better.

Hopefully next year or the year after OR through a software update it will be better. The iPhone isn't too far from covering all it's bases.

I pay $100 [ blabla]

I know that it is quite important for ardent PC users

First: you are now a PC user.
What they sell as a mac since some time IS a PC.

to harp on those of us who prefer to use a more reliable, less virus prone service and pay for the goods. Pardon me for enjoying the fact that in the 3+ years I have owned a Mac and the 2+ years I have owned an iPhone I have never once had to go apeshit crazy deleting files and cleaning up shit that got on it because my PC likes Trojans more than a dick does :p
Second: you are using a PC.

Third: totally ignorant rant. What the fuck has a service to do with the OS? Nobody was fucking talking about an OS here.

I don't mind spending money on things that actually work and I don't mind it being something that I am 98% sure is not going to send me a virus from the "free server space!"

Free? I thought you pay for it?

Also about those secure server spaces etc .. ask sidekick users

If you don't have a clue what you are talking about ... please don't.
