Dem Convention Thoughts

Michelle Obama was excellent as usual.

Makes you proud to be an American!

Everyone has their own opinion.

The speech was ok -- MSNBC panel wants to give her sainthood - oops -- they don't believe in that anymore.

That dress didn't come off the rack.

Wonder how much it cost?

Frames her muscular arms. Wonder if they're insured?

Better than the pearls of swine that dangled around Ann Romney's neck. How much did she pay for those or wear they a writeoff for her MS? Michelle went bling-less tonight which I'm sure was a challenge for her.

Andy, I'm very sorry for the situation about you and your mother. I truly wish it would have been different.

There are always exceptions.

Overall it's been shown that kids grow up better when they have two parents. Not sure what else to say. You mother did the right thing protecting you. I'm sure you're very proud of her.

Yeah, you've convinced me Jack. My mother should have stayed married to the son of a bitch who gambled all of their rent money away, was abusive and threatened to shoot himself if he ever left her and that it would all be her fault. I'll let her know she made the wrong choice in removing me from that atmosphere because it's ALWAYS better to have two parents and she (and myself at the age of two) should have just sucked it up to win your approval.

Shame though, then she would have missed the "Glamorous Single Mother Proms" she went to every year.

In future, if you want to have any interpersonal dialogue with me AT ALL, I'll thank you to keep your fucking mouth shut about things you don't know.

Please point us to "where it has been shown."

Fox has been effusive in their praise of Michelle's speech

Don't be. I was too young to be aware of any of it, we moved into my grandparents' home and I had a very lovely childhood with three incredible caregivers. Most of the story I never even knew until recently because she never wanted to poison my feelings for him since he WAS still my father.

Overall it's been shown that kids grow up better when they have two parents.

Not when one of them is shitty. End of, and I don't care if a clinical "study" says otherwise.

The point is you have no business making blanket statements based on any clinical study as though it is an "all things being equal" CHOICE to be a single parent.

Not sure what else to say.

Then do us both a favor and say nothing more about it.

Funny thing on Fox, no one is badmouthing speakers before they speak - and tell us that what we're gonna hear is not true

see rachel maddow on rick santorum speech

Can you at least give me an example I can attempt to sympathize with?

at least msnbc is showing the minority speakers tonight

funny how they took all the references to God out of their platform and almost every speaker has mentioned God tonight

Thank God...

Perhaps that you have NO idea what you are talking about on this subject? Your causative logic is absurd. You may have as well stated: "Overall it's been shown that children who have perfect lives grow up better." Obviously, all things equal, two parents is better than one. But that "all things equal" is key here. LFAH is NOT the exception here and it's not the "single parent" that is doing the causation here.

Sleeping with one's shoes on is strongly correlated with waking up with a headache.
Therefore, sleeping with one's shoes on causes headaches.

Does this logic sound familiar?

In terms of the convention, I think the Dems have done an amazing job at going straight after the nonsense "you didn't build that" criticism and talking about the American Dream in today's landscape rather than alluding to an imaginary nostalgic version of the 1920's like the Republicans like to do.

My one criticism would be that they have to be careful about some of their rhetoric coming across as "lowered expectations".

I spend a lot of time around "conservatives," (define your term please) and frankly A LOT of them are racist knuckle dragging troglodytes who wouldn't recognize an original thought if it walked up and squeezed their nuts.

But SURE, SOME of them are just deluded.

Ditto that. There's a strong streak of resentment, even hate, building up here. For decades, it's been an all-white town; they used to drive out blacks by various means. Well, now we have blacks, Latinos, a Korean family and a Chinese one, and the "conservatives" aren't happy.

That article speaks to a part of what I have been thinking and feeling for some time. The conventions are a formality. Long-established tradition. But, ultimately, they do not win elections for either side. One who is an electoral and/or political junkie can refer to them, as if they feature some signals, to help predict which party is going to win a presidential election cycle. (Look back to past conventions that were absolute busts, like the Republicans' 1964 and those back-to-back Democrats' 1968 and 1972, to give weight to that theory.) But enough of this feels (and some would say is) controlled. And that it may also be applied to one's general take on the presidential and vice-presidential debates.

Jack, then what happens if a parent dies? Should the widow/widower be forced to remarry? And if one of the parents is like LFAH's? I guess she should have stayed for the nice two parent life.
I'm sorry but the ignorance shown to single parents is disgusting. Are two parents the best? Yes they are but it's not always possible and the fact they get called on it sickens me.

Michelle Obama is one classy lady. She always has been. Presence, style, and grace. The woman advocates for great causes that can really benefit America. She's a wonderful mother and her love for her husband and kids is stellar. She is our modern day Jackie.

Castro, wow. What a man who stands on good principles. He has a very bright political future ahead. 2024, anyone?

I don't believe some of the shit that I've read in this thread.

Honest to God Springer.

It is no wonder that you have less than zero credibility on this site.

But I guess that at least you'd concur with the study then that showed that children of two lesbian parents were better adjusted than those of straight parents.

But to the convention.....

The Republican Ayn Rand Corporatists must be pretty nervous watching this.

The Dems are off to a great start. Michelle Obama was great. Julian Castro was great. However, my favorite quote of the night was from former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland when he said this:

Mitt Romney has so little economic patriotism that even his money needs a passport. It summers on the beaches of the Cayman Islands and winters on the slopes of the Swiss Alps. In Matthew, chapter 6, verse 21, the scriptures teach us that where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. My friends, any man who aspires to be our president should keep both his treasure and his heart in the United States of America.

Valerie Jarrett is on Morning Joe and acquitting herself nicely - Michael Steele and Al Hunt are not letting her filibuster - good for them

The buzz on the convention is the stark diff in message from Tampa

Mika has been quiet - swear to god
