But instead of berthing the vessel in Nantucket, where the senator summers with the missus, Teresa Heinz, Isabel’s hailing port is listed as “Newport” on her stern.

Could the reason be that the Ocean State repealed its Boat Sales and Use Tax back in 1993, making the tiny state to the south a haven - like the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Nassau - for tax-skirting luxury yacht owners?

Cash-strapped Massachusetts still collects a 6.25 percent sales tax and an annual excise tax on yachts. Sources say Isabel sold for something in the neighborhood of $7 million, meaning Kerry saved approximately $437,500 in sales tax and an annual excise tax of about $70,000.

Summerwind, a three-story, 145-foot luxury yacht, maneuvered above the celebrated barrier reef that lines the coast of Belize.

There it dropped anchor

The boat damaged the reef and Greene racked up $1.87 million in unpaid fines.

That's his wife's boat. She's not a politician and can dock it anywhere she wants. The boat was docked there at Newport shipyard not for tax reasons, but for maintenance, upkeep and charter purposes. Apparently they have relatives in Rhode Island who use the boat more than they do.

That's kind and generous of Mr Kerry and his wife.

it's common for Bostonians to dock their boats in rhode island for the summer. ANother place we head to is maine. New Englanders just like getting away for the summer to a place that's close enough to the city for business. I saw this on CNN and it's so NOT a story.

It is just a way of life for us.

btw... I go to new hampshire to buy beer and liquor. I get friends cigarettes while I'm there. New Hampshire has no luxury taxes... they tax property heavily instead.

Does Boston / Cape Cod area even have enough slips for large boats to dock anyway? Do all the shipyards in the Cape Cod area offer what the Newport Shipyard offers, especially for large boats?

When my car needs service I have to go further out to the General Motors dealership, not the Chrysler dealership which is closer. I know when I go someplace busy I have to park my car far away.

Could be a lot of these things but, as usual, the right wingers are so desperate they're trying something, anything to discredit Democrats.

exactly... New Englanders ... hmm... New England is comprised of really small states in comparison to the rest of the states in the nation, so we tend to travel alot between states and tend to feel more like citizens of a region than a particular state.

we always look for the best deal... New hampshire is a 45 minute drive up and rhode island is a 45 minute drive down from Boston.the Kerrys live down on Marlborough street, just over from newbury street, in the center of town just off the charles river.

Anyone living on Social Security, SSI or Social Security Disability (*ahem* and you know who I'm talking to) better thanks the Democrats for that. If it weren't for them you'd either be dead or living in the street.
