Looks like the Republican's attempt to "conservatize" their ticket in upstate NY has not worked

as Democrat Bill Owens defeated Conservative Doug Hoffman in CR 23

after Dede Scozzafava, the original Republican candidate, dropped out due to sagging poll #s and lack of support from the machine

She was/is a "new republican" and supports gay rights and is pro abortion

She was supported by Newt Gingrich and other mainstream Repubs who have argued for a bigger tent in response to declining polling/support for hardline Republican values

Huge win for the Dems - historic really - first time in that district in over a century - yes over 100 years

I think the Repubs fucked themselves here although there is no guarantee that either Scozzafava or Hoffman would've won in a 3 horse race

Democrats win New York congressional race, but conservatives claim victory too
Posted: November 4th, 2009 02:06 AM ET

From CNN Political Producer Rebecca Sinderbrand
(CNN) – The three-way race in New York's 23rd congressional district ended Tuesday night with a surprise Democratic win - the first for the party in the reliably-Republican district since the 19th century.
Democrat Bill Owens defeated Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman to claim victory in a race where an internal GOP fight drew national attention - and forced the party's candidate, Dede Scozzafava, out of the campaign.
National Democrats, smarting over gubernatorial losses in New Jersey and Virginia, seized on the win, with Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine dubbing it "perhaps the most consequential race of the night."
"This race turned out to be the worst of all possible worlds for Republicans as not only did the Democrat, Bill Owens, win a seat that Democrats have not held in more than 100 years, but what occurred in New York has exposed a war within the Republican Party that will not soon end," said Kaine.

I saw on one of the channels that the last time a non-Republican held the seat, it was held by someone from the Whig Party. It's been Republican forever.

They would have lost either way, but if Scozzafava had stayed in the face, Right Wingers could have easily played the two Republican's split the vote allowing the Dem to win. Now they can't really play that card, although I'm sure many will try.

I also think this is a much clearer message to Republican's, you can't expel the moderates from your ranks without hurting your chances of winning.

Looks like the purge of Sarah Palin failed. She needs to stay home take care of moral and family values.

It would be interesting to go back a little further, even. The Whig party dissolved in the 1850s, while the Democrats formed around 1825-1830; it's possible that a Democrat has never held the seat.

It may be a clear message, but I doubt they'll listen. They'll probably claim that were Hoffman the GOP nominee in the first place, he would have won.

I watched the race closely and hope it repudiates those on the right who are asking for a purge of the party in favor of an elected body of sychophants. They would all be clones of Palin and Limbaugh; there is no room for any other views than those of the extreme.

Had they been successful, I think it would have meant I could never consider a Republican candidate for office (I vote for the person not the party). If everyone has to pledge allegiance to nitwits, I think they've automatically lost my vote.

Perhaps this will send Sarah back to looking at Russia and Limbaugh back to his medicine cabinet. They can dream of creating their super race. Hmmm...I think some other guy had that idea back in about 1939. Funny how they try to portray an elected president with that mantra which they so easily espouse.....

Like I said in my other post, if Sarah Palin kept her nose out of it, the Republicans would have had a much better chance.

Sarah...... keep this up and you'll be doing more damage to your party than Bush did.

No they wouldn't have. Scozzafava had tepid (at best) support from conservatives in the area, hence Hoffman's candidacy. For a non-democrat to win the seat, either Hoffman or Scozzafava needed to drop out.

Dierdre Scozzafava would have won New York #23 had it not been for interference.

Here's some spin from Rush Limbaugh.

If you look at Ms. Scozzafava's views she was very left wing -- never made any sense to me why the Republican bigwigs would have chosen here -- we call them rhino's where I come from -- closet Democrats who call themselves Republicans. For example Kansas is full of them because it used to be difficult for Democrats to get elected.

If the Conservative Party candidate had been chosen as the Republican candidate -- I'm sure that he would have won.

What some news organization should be investigating in why Scozzafava was chosen -- since she was a favored new taxes and abortion.

Republican's will not win if they nominate rhino's.

ALSO - to say that this district has been occupied by a Republican since the 19th century is a little misleading -- as you know congressional district change according to population and geographical areas are realigned. You can honestly say that a Democrat held this district as recently as 1993.

It's all about the SPIN.

No, she wouldn't have. She was down in the polls prior to the election, and with Hoffman in the race there was absolutely NO possibility of her winning.

She was up in late-September. Then more prominent GOP figures interferred in the local race and sent her numbers down to prop Doug Hoffman. So, yes she would have pulled it out had it not been for the likes of Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty and, well, you know their names doing their level best to destroy Scozzafava's campaign.

this is classic political theater that went on

WHAT IF ..............

I think if everyone had kept their mouths shut ................. perhaps Dede wins despite her lack of "Republican values" because the distrist is republican

But with Hoffman in the race, making noise ............ even if by his lonesome

I have to believe that once people started to scratch the surface of Dede, at least the less moderate Repubs ...........

that Hoffman would've been the spoiler anyway - as he was

or perhaps common sense would've prevailed and Dede's more moderate social views (some say left wing) would've been a who cares

and she woud've won

can be argued until ...........

the cows come home

which is appropos given CR23

good debate boys

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Georgia) was orginally backing Dede Scozzafava. Just the other day, he reneged, and explained himself on Fox News Channel on Hannity.

Here's The Young Turks' analysis.…
