OK, well after this relationship breakdown i've decided to start being a bit more proactive instead of being down in the dumps and have decided to use my house deposit to get a few things fixed... the problem is that the cost of surgery and dentistry in the UK is pretty damn high.

I'm considering caps/veneers/restylane/rhinoplasty/jaw sculpting/and cheek implants but we're getting easily into the £20,000+ region. I had almost gone ahead with this dental abroad thing in Budapest, but realised the night before that the prices they'd quoted me was for their cheapest quality work and i'd only save a few hundred when taking flights and hotels into consideration.

Does anyone know about, or has anyone experienced any cosmetic or dental surgery abroad? Where is best for what, did it save any money, and is it worth the hassle?

Any advice is really appreciated, since i'm trying to get all this done by my birthday (june.) I know it would save a load to go with Extreme Makeover etc however neither my family nor friends support me in this, and part of the application form was asking for their details so i had to skip that one.

Cheers m8y's!!

I think the costs of procedures in which you're interested are high, no matter where you go.

I do know my friend whose dad went back to Israel for permanent dentures as it was cheaper.

However, when it comes to these types of things, I find that finding the best doctor is paramount to the cost.

In some instances, price is reflective of quality.

On an aside, why is it you'd like to have all this done prior to your birthday?

Well, want to avoid going out (as in night out) until ive had it done but would really like to go out for my birthday feeling confident in how i look.

I know that to a certain extent you do get what you pay for, but the UK is pretty expensive no matter where you go so it doesn't seem very indicative of quality. I know that the cosmetic-tourism industry is booming, but on my net searches for "top rated" practices etc. it tends to lead me to company websites as opposed to review websites.

I've found a couple of testimonials for certain practices, but always wonder if "sarah, 43 from london" is a real person :) I was hoping that as this forum is read by a massive range of people, that some may have had some work done and may be able to suggest specific clinics they or someone they know had used.

Heres hoping :D

I've had "a few" things done. Pec implants being my most drastic. But i've had botox and a little lip plumping. The most important thing is to find a doctor you trust. Someone who respects your opinion and is open and candid with you. I happen to be good friends with the surgeon who's done my surgery and he always gives his artistic ( because when you think about it, it really is like art) as well as medical opinion. An example would be me wanting to get a butt augmentation, because i have 5 feet of back. I didnt want an implant i wanted to use my own fat, turns out i dont have enough fat to transplant to my ass...f8cking hell... I have no doubt that a surgeon who was just out for some cash would have put my life and looks at risk.

Plastic surgery is always a gamble. With the right doctor the odds are in your favor, but things can still go wrong. Before you go under the knife STOP and think...."Is where i'm at now so horrible that i have to risk being disfigured?"

The moving of fat from one place to another is what i was looking to have done for my lips and cheeks. I've had restylane there a few times but it's temporary and in the long run i think i'd save money.

You hear about all the horror stories of surgery gone wrong abroad, but I was told that if i travel within europe then they have to stick to the same standards? the surgeon that you've found, where are they based and what did they do?

My doctor ( and one of my bestest friends) is located in philadelphia. The only thing i've had done to my face is very minor lip plumping. I don't like the lumpy feel of restylane, so i had microdroplettes of silicone oil injected. The tiny bit of silicone oil annoyes the tissue in your lip and causes it to cushion itself by growing new pillowly soft tissue. The effect is more natural and subtle. No one knows unless i tell them. Its a very slow way to go, you wont notice a differnce till you're on your 4th or 6th injection. The downside is that its permanent, so if your unhappy you're stuck with it. The good news...because its slow you can stop and only have a minor change.

My pec implants were replaced in January, and i <3 them. I work out alot but i didnt have the shape and volume to my pecs that i wanted.

I think you've failed to think about after care. Like a post op infection or a complication from the surgery your doctor isnt close by, he's far far away. I dont know how it is in the UK but here in the U.S. another surgeron won't touch a botched job by another surgeon for fear of getting sued. So it could be hard to find someone to fix it. Also most surgeons include aftercare in their fees, so if you do have an issue you can get taken care of. If you go far far away, you may not be able to have easy access to that doctor.

Something else i'd like to point out. I don't think you realize how long recovery time is for stuff like this. I'm still tender from my surgery in January. You don't want to rush this, and be unhappy.

My suggestion is, go to someone fairly close to where you live, or where you can get to with ease. Go get consultations from 5 or 6 different doctors and pick the one you are most comfortable with, not the cheapest.

Ive not even heard of that lip augmentation process, it sounds amazing but a bit scary! I dont think we have it where i am regardless. Fibroplasts forming in my lips sounds mad.
I totally agree that restylane can be lumpy (i can still feel a couple if i give my lip a squeeze, but who else is gonna do that :p it's why im not too bothered about it) but i was thinking of maybe teosyl or something similar. Heard anything about that one?
Regarding the recovery process.... i was hoping a couple months would be long enough (but then again im only basing this on extreme makeover lol.)
I heard that poland was meant to have high standards of dental care, but after browsing the net can only find advertisments for companies, not a collective review centre. I think i'm spotting a gap in the market .... ;)
Ive had radiesse to try and fix my nose, do you know how effective that is for cheek implants?

My concern is more about the reasons you want to have it done. I was hoping that two years down the line you may have changed your mind about this, but alas, no.

As others have said, I really don't see the need for you to have anything done, but clearly you still feel the need to proceed. Whilst I may be out of line, I think your money would be better spent on counselling and working out the demons that are driving you to do this.

You can be as beautiful as you want on the outside, but if you're a shitty person on the inside, then you'll still be a shitty person no matter what procedures you go through.

If this was to correct some awful disfirgurement of some description, then I would understand, but I really can't grasp why someone as handsome as yourself, feels the need to change ones appearance so much. (*8*)

^Amen! He's not bad looking at all. He should leave well enough alone.

Hear! Hear! You're a great looking guy. Leave it alone. Besides, you're only 25, for god's sake! Please talk to a professional counselor. If you're this obsessed now, you'll wind up like a tanned Michael Jackson.

You DO NOT need plastic surgery!

you should find out how much it is stateside, I heard it was somewhere in the region if $15k-20k, which is considerably cheaper than $40k in the UK.

True, and what with our currency collapsing (thanks George!) you could prolly get everything done for about 10 pounds. But...

You're hot and you shouldn't fuck with anything, just look on the internet to see what happens when shit like this gets screwed up. If you look in the mirror and think you need fixin what you really need is therapy for your obviously out-of-whack body image.

Spend the $$$ on a flashy new sports car, that'll get you laid more than cosmetic surgery will.

Cosmetic surgery sounds more promising than what it actually delivers. Unless your health insurance will come in if things go horribly wrong, be sure to have some funds on the side.

You'd be better off to have things done in your own country where you can do more investigation of the talents of the surgeon and get some legal redress, just in case...
