Depressing Movies

If you count documentaries THE BRIDGE (about why people choose San Fran's GG Bridge to commit suicide)
 
Alien 3:
This film is a complete recipe on the subject of everything depressing.

The story is a complete nose dive from the previous film.
The sets are dark, dirty and look so devoid of warmth.
The acting is sometimes overdone but overall most of the actors convey the feeling of hopelessness, especially Weaver.
The music is also a character in and of itself, one of my favourite soundtracks. Its beautifully depressing and it really helped me appreciate the film more than I used to.

Grave of The Fireflies: (an animated film from Japan)
The animation is beautiful and the story is very depressing.
The voice acting is hit and miss sometimes but that does not diminish the story.

Cocoon 1 & 2:

If you aren't crying by the time you get to the scene with Bernie and Rose at the pool, you have one stone heart.
Additionally, in part 2 if you aren't crying by the time you get to hospital room scene with Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, :-D

What Dreams May Come:
The scene where Chris discovers his son and daughter again. I felt the film could have been darker but it cheated.

Thelma & Louise:
The performance from the two leads is amazing. The cinematography is beautiful and the supporting cast, wonderful.
The ending is also very depressing... it lingers with you.

The Grey Zone: If you watch Schindler's List, then check this one out too.
Who knew David Arquette could be so serious in a role.
Some other actors in it are Mira Sorvino and Harvey Keitel.

A Love To Hide: This film may destroy you!
It's a french film with subtitles but so worth it if you are running with the WWII/holocaust theme above.

Hands down, the single most depressing film I have ever seen is Dancer in the Dark. Supposedly, the experience was so intense for Bjork (who is brilliant in it) that she swore she would never act again.

 
Oh and The Reader wasn't a bundle of laughs either!

It's depressing alright, and for the reasons you mention, but ultimately, I find, just because it's a bad film. I can't find any beauty in it. Show me.

Bent was mentioned, that was awful depressing.
Streamers, the Vietnam war era play in the barracks with its RACIAL and Gay story line is no cheery piece.
My number 1 is a end of the world doomer. Viggo Mortensen "The Road". No smiles or clapping in the silent filled theater when the lights came on after a viewing of this. No end of the world flick is as grim and black as this piece of sludge, it is worth a view and well done. Guy Pearce is in this flick too. He likes grim roles.
Not talking about Priscilla Queen of the desert either. Amongst his darker works other than the Road you have "The Proposition", "Ravenous" "Hurt Locker", "Memento", & "A Slipping Down Life"
oh, yeah
Human Centipede is just depressingly gross.....
