I agree they took a cheap shot at making the old lady look stupid and homophobic. But it's not totally untrue. And at the end of the day, it's a comedy, not going to have much impact on society.
No, you got it all wrong. I wasn't criticizing the show for the scene itself, I just said I don't think it's funny (disagreeing with some of the posters here), because it actually happens in real life. I know someone in Missouri right now who certainly isn't laughing.
And it may not have
that much of an impact, but it will have an impact, in that it will make older people think twice before letting their homophobia show, and that is a positive. I just don't find it funny, because I know that older people are a big part of the reason why we have to wait for things like non-discrimination laws, let alone marriage equality. I'd rather not have to wait for those kinds of people who simply will not change to die out... it sounds morbid, but it's ultimately what we need to do... wait things out. In the meantime, a lot of people suffer. But this scene outlined how people will use opportunities like this to hate on gays -- "Can't it be both?".

Anyway, if anything Ida's stupid comments might make a homophobe that watches the show realize how idiotic they really are.
YES!!! For once, we are in 100% agreement.

WHY IS THAT HOMOPHOBIA???? SHE TOLD THE TRUTH!!!
Well, Mr. "Sean Penn", I will endeavor to explain this to you. If you watched the scene, she initially thought that Rafael was a third guy and they were in a three way relationship. Then, when she was told that Rafael was their dog, her immediate line of thinking that they're gay and they have a dog, so it's some kind of weird, twisted "substitute" for kids. That's bullshit, because they could have kids if they wanted to, and it takes a homophobic person to say "Right, because you can't have kids" (one more time where her mind went somewhere where it really shouldn't have), something that they probably wouldn't do if a single person had a dog, or a hetero couple in which one of them was sterile (or even if both of them were perfectly capable of biologically having kids). That was the one where her comments crossed over from just "mean" to mean-
spirited. If a single, presumably hetero person introduced you to their dog, you probably wouldn't go "Right because you can't (or aren't fit to) have a kid.". If a hetero couple introduced you to their dog, you wouldn't assume that they were infertile and say "Right, because I'm sure one of you is probably sterile, and that's why you have a dog and no kids."
If you still want to contest this, we can go a few more rounds. I've done it before, and I'll be willing to do it as long as it takes. I maintain that those particular comments are homophobic and down right mean-spirited, and I will never change my mind on that. That was simply uncalled for on Susan's part, and that is why I was willing to give Lee the benefit of the doubt that first episode, particularly since he gave Susan credit for being nice both with the cookies and helping him look for Rafael, until he found out how deceptive she had been in both cases. And technically, she even kidnapped the dog... she's lucky no one pressed charges against her. But none of that takes away from how mean-spirited the gay guys were this last episode by turning on the fountain so early while they were sleeping, which means they couldn't have been bothering them by "yakking on the phone" with Susan's mom, grunting through Pilates videos, or "massacring the score to Brigadoon".
