Did American congresss know that our prime minister is an Atheist ?

That is something so foreign to American sensibilities. I've ALWAYS hoped that we could actually have an atheist President, and I would entirely celebrate that.

Good on the Aussies not to hold that against somebody. I'd feel a lot better if I wasn't governed by powerful people who are trying their hardest to install their own Christian version of Sharia Law in its most harmful possible form.

I WANT TO MOVE TO AUSTRALIA...NOW!!!!!!!!!

In their private thoughts,
the god fearing Congress are atheists themselves but unfortunately they are in the closet atheists = atheist-phobia

"An ally for all times" once you finally joined the war effort! And you were eventually there with us! Australia does not forget! We will never forget!

to install their own Christian version of Sharia Law

???? WTF ???

I listened to the Prime Minister's remarks with great humility. Her praise and gratitude were very kind.

I'm sure some Congressmen know that she is an atheist, and I'm sure that will be a hindrance to no one.

well, the more leaders in America know an atheist can also be a leader,
the more confident they will be to come out without the fear of religious people.

Good for her for being honest in her beliefs. In this backwards country, professing atheism is a nail in the coffin for your career.

I don't believe so.
If it is true, why are so many Americans behave in a godless way ?

Most Americans are practical deists. They plant their seed; they say a little prayer; they water the field; they reap the harvest. Nobody really pays much attention to the little prayer. ;)

You can behave as godlessly as you like, Telstra, so long as you go to church on Sunday. :-)

I don't believe that President Obama actually believes in God - he's just smart enough to know that showing up at church once in a while and pretending to believe is the only way to get elected while America remains so firmly in the grip of such a politicised collection of religious zealots.

Agree. I find him too cerebral to believe Noah gathered every species of mites and ticks on a boat for the new world.

there are many, many, many religious people who do not read the bible as a literal, historic document. I dare say, a majority even.

I have seen no evidence to suggest that President Obama is anything other than a Christian aside from some wishful thinking.

to the OP, should Congress have somehow reacted differently because your PM is an atheist?

Well, as a godless person is a big taboo and is a no no for the US government,
i would expect they would make a scene like the Crucible movie i saw.

Regardless of whether she is an atheist ..| or not, her speech didn't go over so well outside the room.

"You have a true friend 'down under'," she declared, to rapturous applause.

To Australian ears, the flattery seemed heavy-handed. A bit desperate. Aussies might have called it crawling, or sucking up - not a desirable trait.

It didn't go over so well here either. I particularly found the bit offensive where she called the US "the cradle of democracy." That crosses a line, coming from someone leading a Commonwealth country. I mean it's not like we didn't have the Magna Carta or anything, which was ironically enough the shared democratic roots on which the US was building. Gillard doesn't know the history of the Westminster parliament of which she is the chief minister. Disgraceful!

I generally like Australia, except for the government proposals to censor the internet.
