  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

did you ever play marbles?

We also played pogs. Points for anyone who knows what pogs are.
They were really popular when my baby brother was in elementary school. The whole family learned how to play, just so we could keep the little fucker entertained.

Little shit won all of my pogs off of me. :grrr:

I never understood what one was supposed to do with marbles.

I played with Barbies

You and me both, honey ! ;)

I never quite understood what was going on with the marbles thing....

Barbie's Dream Camper was much more interesting to me... (except those cheap red plaid drapes in the window really had to go....)

I was part of the marble craze and the Yo-Yo craze and the Clackers craze (deadly machines, those) and the Hula Hoop craze (including the Shoop-Shoop Hula Hoop craze) and a lot of other crazes of my generation.

But I was born a little too early the Pogs craze. I remember them, though, even if I didn't collect them:

my elder brother still keeps hundreds that he used to win to the other guys in the neighborhood... I remember trying but you already know I'm not gifted for that sort of things... heck, I hardly ever went out to play with other kids

^ Clackers ??

Clackers were 2 huge marbles attached to 2 strings about 1 foot long and joined by a ring or a loop.

You would stick your finger or thumb through the loop and move your hand quickly up and down so that the balls would swing out and up, then out and down, in arcs, smashing into each other at the top and bottom of their arcs.

They had a tendency to smash into other things as well. . . like children's faces and arms and such.

'Clackers' came from the sound the balls made when the smashed into each other.

Oh, yeah. They had a tendency to explode as well.

I loved playing marbles at primary school - there seemed to be a marble season which came round each year, and lasted for a few weeks. For those weeks the gravel of the playground would be turned into "casinos" where you had a chance to pitch your skill against somebody else's and collect their marbles. I was in fact a totally crap player, but I did have the knack of setting up a casino which looked deceptively easy, but was harder than it looked, so I ended up winning quite a lot.

We called the smaller ones "marbles" (inventive, huh?), the largest ones "tom bowlers", and the medium ones "semi toms".

I'd forgotten all about it until I saw this thread!

OMG, what we had when I was younger at my junior school (grades 1-7) was very similar to that. We had a marble season that started at the start of the school yr and lasted for a couple of weeks. The entire gravel-pit area of our school grounds which the rest of the yr was pretty empty would become like a massive mall. Some guys would set up their marble and depending on how valuable it was would determine a lot. Like where you had to set up and how many shots the other guy could take at your marble.

So the other guy would come to you, you'd inspect his marble and say if it was okay for him to take a shot. When you said it was okay for him to take the shot you had to immediately say "all the rules in the book" or he could by default just grab your marble. He had to hit the marble directly on top of yours but wasn't allowed to just drop it on top, that was known as bomb-dropping and was disallowed as you'd said "all the rules in the book." There was a whole manner in which you had to stand and how you had to throw the marble. If there was a

But in effect it was a very democratic system because anyone, from one marble could in effect collect a massive collection. If there was a dispute all the other people who'd seen the alleged "fuss," that's what a direct hit was could get involved. SOmetimes one guy would go up against an entire mob, and when I mean mob, I literally mean MOB saying no it wasn't a fuss, and would be chased off the grounds with cries of fuss. Happened to me once, it scared the crap outta me.

Wow, I haven't thought about all this in YEARS...:D

The only time I played with a Barbie doll was when I was with my childhood friend. She had Barbie's poll house or something similar. Well, I made Barbie go down the slide head-first, and she ended up having a concussion. I can't remember if I pulled her head off though.

My friend also put her in a microwave for about 30 seconds. We were very unconventional... I don't think there were many girls who would do that with their Barbie.

As for marbles... I never really played except for a few times, but I did collect them. I had a bunch until I discovered what happens when they fall off the 10th floor and hit the pavement.

I used to play marbles when they were 'in' at school.

The moved onto yo-yos... then to pogs.... then back to marbles again.

Nope, I didn't play marbles... I played "canicas" ;)

That's why I never let the boys play with my Barbie
