I know race is a sensitive topic, so if you have a weak stomach, leave now.

In another thread, I made an observation.

It's not just about dating. It's about everything else. I've noted that asian kids hate speaking in their native language, especially in public. They'd rather speak in English.

Hispanic kids, on the other hand, would rather speak in Spanish than English among themselves.

Asian kids sometimes are embarrassed showing other people about their cultures.

Hispanic kids embrace and regularly bring their non-Hispanic friends to their cultural events.

It's still largely ok for people to make fun of Asian languages by making nonsensical noises like "chong chong". I hear it in public all the time. I hear it at work, school, in the mall, all the time.

I've thought long and hard for a reason why, as a race, Asian Americans lack the self-respect that we observe in other races. I still have no answer. Considering we do pretty darn well academically and economically compared to other races.

Heck, even schools like Harvard and Princeton have to subtract 50 points out of Asian kids' SAT scores during admission while adding 300+ points to other minority students' scores.

Why do you guys think Asians have such a hard time accepting who we are as a people? Why do we find so many gay Asian guys pandering to white guys while ignoring people of other races, especially other Asians. And don't tell me I'm imagining this. I've been observing this phenomenon for years. Everyone I've talked to about this has shared the same observation. The only people who deny this are either ultra-PC liberals or people who pander to white people themselves.

umm its all about childhood upbringing and what you watch on TV.
There are always no Asians on TV. It is that simple.

What about people of other races? Hispanic faces show up on tv only a little more than Asians, but Hispanic kids and people embrace their roots and regularly share them with the rest of us.

I have heard Hispanic kids like to watch spanish speaking channels, is that true ?

Good grief, I can't believe that's legal. I can see positive discrimination being supported, but that's directly negative.

You didn't know about this? They've been doing this for years when they started realizing they had a disproportionate number of Asian kids scoring way above everyone else. The only reason they are able to get away with this practice is Asian people don't like to stir up trouble. If this was the case with any other race, there'd be huge lawsuits and protests.

Perhaps it is a eagerness to assimilate on the part of the Asians. Hispanics generally are Catholic and that provides a strong tie to culture. Maybe the Mass is in Spanish.

I must say that I was unaware of Asian children being so eager to leave their culture.

the original post is ridiculous. Full of broad generalizations, many inaccurate.

I think language plays a big part here - with Hispanics they all have Spanish in common and thus assimilation does not need to me made so quickly, whereas the Asian community don't have that shared linguistic thing thus have to get on with learning English quickly to integrate.

It may be in our country. But there are zillions of Asians on Asian TV.

Why do Christianly Do-gooders in our country want a create a planet of Homogenised Humans. Because that's what you're asking for— individual cultures are being discarded and Everybody is the same.

I've attended many events of many cultures. The major major major difference between asian events and everyone else is if you just stand there and listen at asian events you mostly only hear English being spoken even when it's broken English.

It's not just Asian kids. Many Asian adults are following this trend. They'd rather speak English rather than their native tongue even though they spent most of their lives speaking their native language. Hispanic people, on the other hand, speak Spanish all the time even when you ask them to speak in English.

In my original post, I specifically said in the US. I've only observed this phenomenon of Asians pandering to white people in the US. I can't speak for any other place.

Very good point, on a side note why don't we be exceptionally polite and courteous and make everyone check their browsres to see if they are on the right web sight?:D

Anyway, assimilation is a good thing.
Just look at Islamic culture, they don't want to assimilate which causes a lot of tensions worldwide.

Well, I would argue that assimilation is a good thing, but my observations tell me these people are doing more than just assimilating. They are embarrassed of their own roots.

I don't think it's any secret that I am damn proud of my family and of our humble past. Out of us 5 kids, we have 2 department heads in their respective companies, a mathematician doing nuclear research, a project manager at a major insurance company, and a middle manager at an engineering firm. It literally took us a quarter of a generation to go from having to sleep all day to not feel hungry when there's no food for the day to where we are now.

No matter how much my brothers and sisters try to get their kids to speak our language to their grandparents (my parents), the kids still resiliently speak English.

This is why I envy people of Hispanic descent. Somehow, they are able to get their kids to embrace their roots.

umm the Success, you see the results worldwide.
I think the overseas Asians (east asians) are doing quite well worldwide ;)

Not sure about the Hispanic success stories ...

Just speculating... it might be part of the Asian culture to feel that is it disrespectful to not try to speak the language of the land that you live in.
At the risk of being accused of racism or whatever I will say that it drives me nuts to listen to people in a store speaking a foreign language on their cell phone, most are quite loud.
The other day I stopped for lunch, a couple in their 60's were conversing in a very loud fashion in what sounded like polish (I know a few words) they were so loud that others could not have a conversation, we all had to sit and listen, upon leaving I looked at them and thanked them for sharing.
