Digital Camera Advice - please!

Hey - so I have a Fujifilm Finepix f550 but have never been happy with it. :grrr: Why? It's kinda bulky, very slow, terrible in low light, flash barely works and makes it even slower. About the only good thing about it is the macro mode. So, I'm looking for a new camera. Since my existing camera is Fuji, if I go with Olympus I could keep my XD memory cards (I have 3 of them) but at this point I just want a good, reliable, fast smallish camera that takes great pics, especially macro so I wouldn't be opposed to switching entirely. Also when I read the reviews of the olympus at dpreview.com and cnet.com they aren't great even though I have to admit I was totally seduced by the Olympus 770SW since it is waterproof to 3m and I'm going to bermuda for a week in September but again the reviews aren't that great. The canon's (sd850IS and powershot sd1000 and sd800) and new sony dsc-t100 and s800 get really good reviews. The panasonic dmc-tz3 looks good too. Can anyone help me decide?

Canon all the way! I've had a (now superceded) Powershot A85 for the past three years and love it. Have had no problems with it whatsoever, so can only assume that today's models would be just as good (and a darn sight cheaper than what I paid for mine three years ago!).
 
Yeah - the Fujifilm f550 that I paid 300+ for a few years ago is now on ebay for $85 brand new. So much for recouping my waste of an investment.
 
If you're looking for something that's spectacular in low light, go with the Canon Powershot Sx IS, where the "x" is 1, 2, 3, ... I don't remember which one they're on now. The IS is image stabilization, where the lens elements move to counteract some of your camera shake. It really works. I've got the Digital Rebel XT and have an IS lens. It's spectacular.

May I suggest an excellent site for specs and reviews of digital cameras http://www.steves-digicams.com/ It also has sample photos from the cameras reviewed. My mate has just bought one of the cannon powershot range and the results are excellent.
 
People tend to over look Panasonic cameras. Some reviews have been bad too. But reviews for cameraa are like movie reviews! If they pan it, I go see it to make up my own mind!!!

My Panasonic is not the tye your looking for, it is a LUMIX DMC-FZ30. Great camera!Great pics and sweet macro w/12x zoom!

Steves digicam is a great suggestion for reviews! Good luck!
 
I've had those kodac easyshare things. well i've had one. mom has the other. the only thing i don't like about mine is that mine doesn't have a macro mode so i'm forever taking pictures of bugs, fish, flowers and what not and having them out of focus. :(

My camera has macro mode and it sucks ass! My 4MP Konica Minolta camera sucks!
 
I bought my Sony before coming here for a review. I am really happy with it. It takes great pix.

I've been doing research on steve's site as well as www.cnet.com and dpreview.com
Hoping to make a decision and purchase before Memorial Day!
 
Thanks everyone, I'm going to be doing a lot of web research and am leaning toward a canon or sony.

I wish I could find an olympus I like so I could just use the Xd Cards I already have but in the technical reviews the olympus cameras just don't seem to do well.
 
FOund out today that they don't make the Canon SD700 IS anymore because it's being replace this month with the Canon SD850 IS. Now the question becomes do I wait and get the 850 IS or go with the Olympus 770 SW. Help! This really shouldn't be this hard! But if I'm spending this kind of money I want to make the right choice. You know?

I have to agree with the people voting Canon.
While never having owned one, I've heard nothing but good about them.

I can also supposrt a move for an Olympus. I have the Stylus Verve (which they no longer sell :() and am very happy with it. Small, sleek, and light.
(Plus you can keep your XD cards!)
 
Remember, once you're above 5MP, the lens is more important than the image sensor. And today's cameras are not expensive enough to have great lenses. 8 vs 7.1 MP......means nothing. Which one has the faster lens (the lower f number)? That's the one to go with.

The IS lenses allow you to get away with longer shutter speeds than you'd normally be able to use. This is a HUGE advantage in low light. Flash is the mother of all evils.

Regarding the SD700 vs SD850...I'd go to ebay and get a 700. You can save a lot of money going used without getting much of a performance decrease since the advances have been in resolution which is meaningless without kickass lenses anyway.

For the average user 8MP vs 7.1MP is a difference that will never be noticed... or even used.

For anyone doing anything professional they are going to go 10MP or more anyway... and SLR.

n.b. Not an attack, just an opinion.

Although when you say it as 900,000 pixels difference it sounds more. But when you think that your monitor is less than 2 megapixels you start to think "why do I need so many?" the answer is often that you really don't unless you want to produce photo quality posters or enlarge small portions of a photo.
