Digital Camera help

Hi, guys. I am looking for a high zoom camera. I am far from a professional photographer. I had an DSLR camera many years ago. It had a high zoom and was very low megapixel compared to today's cameras. I was looking at old photos the other day and my current 9MP camerea photos don't even touch the quality of the old 3 MP DSLR.

I go to many baseball games and love to zoom in on the players and plays. I am looking for a camera that can have a high speed photos without much blur at a higher zoom.

Can I get such a camera in something simple? I was looking at dslr cameras again and they seem very complicated, and none seem to have built in zoom like my old one had. Are there any point and shoot cameras that can fit the bill? I don't care if its a little larger. I am looking to spend $500 or less.

Your opinions will greatly help.

Well -- I spent a LOT of time researching cameras before getting mine...

I DID have a budget -- and so was limited somewhat in that regard...

I bought the Lumix ZS7 for a little over $200...

Since Panasonic bought Leica -- it has the Leica Lens -- AWESOME zoom and takes GREAT pictures (check out my blogs)...

I've been MORE than happy with it...

Although -- it was awhile ago when I bought it -- and they PROBABLY have NEWER and BETTER cameras out now...

What you will need is a camera with a reasonable lens. The small point and shoots mostly don't have a real lens at all. You will have to look at so called "bridge" cameras, or DSLRs. If you add a bit to your budget you will get the eos digital rebel xs WITH a good zoom lens and the usual (mediocre) normal lens.

The Canon Rebel cameras are awesome. But damn expensive here in the U.S. I've been really happy with my 7 year old Konica Minolta camera. After I buy my new PC in the future I will start investing in a better camera.

You forgot to mention that the Rebels are BIG!!!

And BIG does NOT equal GOOD...

If your camera is CUMBERSOME -- you're LESS likely to use it as often...

I WILL AGREE about it being a QUALITY camera...

Just too damn big...

The thing I learned from point and shoot cameras they are only good if you like to take pictures where zoom is not needed. Otherwise if you are planning to zoom in on people at an event you might need a bigger camera. Plus point and shoot cameras are cheap and can break easily. I've gone through 3 point and shoot cameras where the lens broke.

I bought a Canon point and shoot broke within 24 hours of buying it. So you see if you are wanting to be a photography it being a job or a hobby bigger cameras are essential which is why a camera like the Canon Rebel is a perfect choice because I always hear positive things about the camera.

Of course the more money you pay for a point and shoot the more quality it might have but still small cameras can break just like an expensive phone like the iPhone can break when dropped.

Also the original poster said he was looking for a camera with good zoom and sadly point and shoot cameras are not as good in the zoom department.

^ exactly. you will not get good zoomed pictures with the small cameras. you need optics for a good zoom, digital zoom is the worst thing that you can do to pictures. some of the bridge cameras do have reasonable well optics now, too. they are not as big as dslrs but still quite bigger than the small cameras.

Its a Nikon that cost OVER $1,000 (not to mention the costs of the lenses)...

That was the point I was trying to make -- it is RARELY used -- and over 90% of our photos are taken with the smaller Lumix...

I'm certainly NOT qualified to ARGUE cameras with either you, Corny OR Gamerbear...

I was just talking about our PERSONAL experience!!!

^ what a waste I only take pics with a small cam when I am climbing or in an amusement park or similar where either something or "someone" could happen to the camera.

I KNOW!!! Oh well -- Geddy likes the CONCEPT of having it -- it is just WAY TOO COMPLICATED...
