Dilemma about a stray puppy

it's sad but some owners will take their pets out to the country to dispose of them when they no longer keep them. First i would say check with the local vet. Place an ad or put up flyers. To see if you get a response. If not you have a new puppy.

Update on this. We took him to the vet near by. They haven't heard anyone looking for a dog like this. The vet checked the dog and said he is defintely about 4 months old. A little malnourished, but nothing to worry about.

Most probably yes. We will call the sherrif office again tomorrow and if still no one looking for this dog we will keep him.

yeah, i guess you could name him Vannie, he was traveling and you can travel in a Van so I could see how it could work....but..Gulliver..everyone will get with no explanation needed. He'd have to explain the Vannie thing for the rest of his life...

Try a Facebook search, there may be groups for lost and found pets in the area

Why do I keep thinking that you have kidnapped someone's dog?

Keep him until you find the owner and do your best to find the owner. Take pictures, post them on your social media and mention where you found him. Then send links to anyone in the area where you found it.

BTW, if it's a small puppy he cannot have been that far from home. They don't walk miles, at least not in a straight line.

Oh, and if they have to pick it up in a different state, you'll know how much they miss him.

Update on this. He has joined our family.

Funny story about this. We decided to name him Maxy. We even made a name tag for him with our phone numbers on there. We took him to our family xmas party. There, we introduced him to everyone. My brother pulled us aside and told us we need to change his name. Huh? He insisted we needed to change his name. My partner asked why? This was when my sister came by and told us about maxi pads.

We have never heard of it before. Leave it to a couple of gay guys to name their dog Maxy. :rotflmao:

My better half and I drove through the countryside last night. We found a stray puppy walking on the side of the road. We stopped and called him and he came over to us. No collar or anything on him.

We called the county and they sent an officer out. We thought he was sent out to take the dog to a shelter. When the officer got there, he told us they do not have a shelter and he recommended us to either let the dog loose or take him with us.

We have been thinking of getting another lab because ours is getting really old.

Should we just keep him or somehow try to find the owner? We are only passing through this state so we will not be here much longer.

Obviously, I am conflicted. It will be hard to try to find the owner. The area is literally all fields and the hills have eyes kinda feel. And we are just passing through. On the other hand, if I lost a puppy I would want him back.

Go to all the local vets with a photo and description of the pup and explain the situation. Ask them to put up a flyer with a number to reach you in case one of the vets gets a visit from the owner(s). Also leave contact info with the police in case the owners contact them as well. Then take the dog with you and care for it like it is your own. Be prepared to give the dog up if the owners do contact you, if not you have yourself a new pup.

It sounds as though you, and Maxy, have found each other for good reasons.

He's only about 4mo. old? He was out by the road by himself?

It would seem that his former humans, if there were any, may not have cared about him all that much, to let hm run loose like that. Then again, it was farm country. Probably, with other animals around, they may not even realize that he's gone. That doesn't mean they were "bad", or anything like that.

He was likely just another one of a litter. At least, with you, he's much more than that, which is awesome!

I also meant to ask about your older lab, your "home" dog. Male or female? Adapting to Maxy, or not so much?

I'd like to tell you about our "rescued" German Shepherd, and all the people, and various pets, that she gallantly put up with. However, I don't want to get into writing a novel ...

Our 15 year old is fine with Max. Yeah, last night we changed his name to Max. Kid loves old man. Old man tolerates kid.

We spent over a week posting his pictures and looking for any post on the internet for a lost dog. We have since moved on from that part of the country. We did our our number out there, though. No one has called us yet.
