Dude, there's a reason why you did what you did. You wanted to demistify the whole situation right? So now that you have, take use of the helpful work you've done. Tell your friend because he needs to know how fucked up the situation is.
 
Yes!! You tell him and give him a place to go, to get away from a scumbag that would send him threats and hate mail - which is against the law by the way... He could have the guy arrested for the mail threats (Fed offense) and blackmail on top of it.

Get your friend out of this damaging relationship. You could be saving his life.
