  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

Dirty Hispanics

So... does this count as a Jewish thread or do I need to start one of those?

Which reminds me of a funny story... My friend Kim is half Italian. One time someone was asking one of her aunts about her race. She insisted that Kim's aunt wasn't white, regardless of her assurances that she was. Finally, she mentioned that she was Italian. The woman smiled and said, "Ah, you're Euro-Latino!"

Seriously. Has anyone else ever heard that term before?

Really, Sephardic?
Hmmm... That's actually a much more complicated question than you think.

Ethnically, I have no idea. I'm a convert, but my dad's side of the family has a long history of being the wrong religion in the wrong place at the wrong time. (A distant cousin of mine was in the news a few years ago for being a whackjob Fundie LDS...)

In practice, I tend to follow a mix of Sephardic and Ashkenazi customs. (Sephardic Passover traditions work much better with my fragile digestive system, for example.)

Really, though, I'm just a mutt.

Well Lilbit, at least you have an interesting family history:kiss:

Yes. It's called "other."
In that case, I'm gonna jump on Madonna's "I'm not white" bandwagon.

If I had more energy, this would be a perfect time for me to go off on a rant about the legal definitions of race vs ethnicity, as well as the US Census Bureau's insistence upon the term "Hispanic" rather than "Latino" and their refusal to recognize other important ethnic minorities (who are otherwise classified as Caucasian) on their forms.

Only racist people don't post in the Asian thread.

The family legend is that the founder of the American branch of the family came to the country stowed away in a wine cask. There are a lot of inconsistencies in the story, though, so I don'tknow how true it is.

There's also a companion of Charlemagne who appears to be a member of my family, if not a direct ancestor.

My boss actually asked me about the whackjob cousin one day. She recognized the name, and she just had to know if he was a relative of mine. A couple other friends took notice of the name, but they were a bit more tactful about it.
