Disc Question - What happened to Zips, Floppies

Yes, I am way behind. My pc is old and I am not tech savvy. So today when I went to put my floppy into a friend's computer (sounds almost graphic) I could not find the drive. So I had to burn the stuff to a cd-r and then load to his pc.

My question is, there is no way that is what has replaced zip discs and floppies so can someone tell me what people use now when they want to download something and put it on a disc fast? Also, my friend did not have email so I couldn't just sent it.

Actually CD's and DVD's HAVE replaced floppies and zips, as they're dirt cheap and store vastly more amounts of data.

However, in your case, I would simply invest in a USB flash drive. Those are small, cheap, simple, and come in sizes up to 64 gigabytess now, if not more. AND they are rewritable as well. You can get 4 gig ones now for under $20.

But you hit the nail on the head - if these CD's and DVD's are not rewritable, they are not as efficient as zips even though they hold more data. It takes awhile to write a CD.

Zips were a failure right from the start. When this storage media came up, drives & disks were overpriced and everybody was either still using floppies or the better CD-ROMs.

But still, I had to buy a Zip disk because at school we used Macs with such backwards drives.

You can get rewritable cds and dvds. Zip is still used as backup in business. USB drives seem to be the most common way to transport and lose data at the moment.

Thanks guys, I need to look into the USB drives.

I agree that my friend should have email (and I think he was lying), but I did try to get onto the internet and there was no connection. So I think the emails I saw on his desk where probably faxed to him from his boss. I was in his office.

We sold a floppy drive and a pack of floppy disks today actually.

USB flash drive is your best option though. They are great for transferring files. CD and DVDs are OK if you want a permanent (ish) storage of files.

Zip is still used as backup in business.

Tape is more common though :P (Unless you are talking about the backwards IT in your office :D)

Do you remember 8 tracks and cassettes? So do I - but technology changes. Now I plug in my MP3 player or turn on my satellite radio. Now the USB flash drive is SO much more efficient than the old floppys and ZIP disks.

I got my tapes and zips muddled up. Tape is so old yet apparently it is still current!

I have two 5 1/4 floppy drives and a Colorado Tape Backup drive if anyone wants them. LOL.

I bought my first 512MB USB drive in January 2005 - for $89!

I saw 1GB USB sticks selling for $2 each at a computer store the other day. They truly are the modern-day floppy.

The click of death - I forgot about that noise! Fortunately it has been a LONG time since I used one of those pieces of shit - and yes, Iomega should have been drawn and quartered for that piece of crap.:mad:

i still use a floppy drive occasionally. i actually have a disk in the drive at this moment. however, my preferred method of transferring files is my 4 GB usb/flash drive.

What happened to hard drives with moving parts? Whos great idea was that anyway, they were so susceptible to movement. Solid State FTW :)

I still have to used floppies in my lab because some of the old equipment are controlled by equally old computers without even usb ports! What I really hate about them isn't how slow they are. About half of the disks get corrupted somehow and I lose the data. It's not too much of a big deal, though cuz everything is saved in the hdd on the old computers, transferred to my own pc, put on gmail, and printed out on paper. It's just frustrating to have to keep buying those pieces of shit that cost more than a CD spindle. Such a fucking waste. At least my roommate can use them as coasters. :rolleyes:

I've got an Iomega zip drive. I used it when I had a 386 because the harddrive on the computer was only a few hundred megabytes.

Now it's obselete as I no longer use it. The last time I bought a computer with a 3.5 inch disk drive on it was in 2002. Since then the price of external hard disks have fallen per gigabyte so much, that those 1.44 mb seems pretty crap.

Ah, for the days when one could fit an entire game on one of those little flat square disks.
