I don't think you need to be discreet to answer this. It all starts with eye contact. If a guy holds eye contact with you for a millisecond longer than he "should", that's a start. But be aware that any longer than a millisecond is more likely to provoke a "what the fuck are you looking at?" than a "Come suck my dick". You don't need a stopwatch. That millisecond is easily detected. You can feel it. This, I believe is what gaydar is.
