  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Discussion Thread from the Funny Anti-Religious Pictures thread.

There are circles only because those who want to post multiple slurs against religion refuse to pay any attention to what the religion actually teaches.

...and also because religious folk mistakenly assume that others should pay attention to what religions teach.

The problem is of course that the Bible does not support such things.

"Love your enemy", "Do good to those who hate you", "Turn the other cheat", "If a man asks for your coat, give him your shirt, too", "Consider others as more important than yourselves", and so on don't encourage anything like what is listed.

Society has far to go to get close to what the Bible does encourage.

you must be reading the Trump Bible

Apologies if i am mistaken, but i am sure that you have expressed your own version of [STRIKE]slurs[/STRIKE] displeasure at many an image posted.

If they're going to criticise, then yes -- they should.

Otherwise, it's just a celebration of ignorant insults -- which are forbidden by the CoC.

Why people who despise religion should think they get a pass on the rules is a mystery. I wouldn't be allowed to post cartoons about Asians based on the assumption they are genetically inferior, so no one should be allowed to post about religions based on false assumptions, either.

My expressions of displeasure are objective and based on what is actually there, not on notions with no basis in fact.

The latter are slurs. The former is what the forum is stated to be for: discussion. And apparently when it comes to religion, one faction can get the purpose of the forum set aside.

That such things about religion can be posted but I couldn't get away with a cartoon showing Obama as a monkey is a serious mark on the forum.

Hitchens would be quite correct if he were objective and phrased it as "how barbarically they behaved when they were corrupted by holding secular power and were making an offer that people could not refuse."

Although it is arguable that in Islam, the religion itself teaches that it should hold state power, Jesus took the opposing position, clearly drawing a line between secular power and church. Thanks to Theodosius, that line got wiped away, and Rome's bishop came to claim to hold the "sword" of government -- irrevocably corrupting the Western expression of Christianity.

If we look at Eastern (Asian) Christianity, it never held outright secular power, and lacked all sorts of corruption Rome, Constantinople, and later Moscow grew.

Racism is legally and morally procribed. Assumptions about religions or non-belief aren't. Easy peasy.

The water dripping miracle which turned out to be a blocked toilet.

One amazing aspect of that is that India still has a law against blasphemy.....

I wonder -- if someone believed he was God, could he get people arrested for insulting him? :p

The laws against insulting another's religious feelings are abused by fundamentalist assholes all the time.

They also keep the peace.

Choose one.

You really need to read the Code of Conduct -- there is no differentiation made.

What provision of the CofC do you have in mind? If it's the CofC prohibition about hate speech, false assumptions or differences of opinions about religion or atheism, etc. aren't in themselves hate speech or religious slurs. As witness presumably this wonderful thread.

A derogatory statement based on falsehood is not a "difference of opinion", it's a lie and a slur. And that kind of thing was a great deal of what the FARIP thread had deteriorated to.

Insulting or derogatory cartoons or posts based on false assumptions about race are immediately removed -- there shouldn't be a double standard for religion.

I've heard some of those false assumptions spouted and defended by quite a few people who're some denomination of Christianity. I don't really pry into people's personal lives and try, myself, to stay as far away from enthusiastic outward gestures of spirituality as I possibly can. I do think it's the height of snobbishness to declare that the visual satire here is based on false assumptions when everyone here can point to one of the bearers of the original assumption, who believe it's not false at all. And are, in fact, Christian.

And race is not like religion because I'm no longer of the Baptist persuasion; meanwhile, my white ass isn't getting any darker. It's a matter of personal choice that may or may not impact others as opposed to people making trouble about melanin amount. Get it?

Many of the false assumptions are held by no Christians, nor by any reputable scholars -- they're just invented as slurs.

And just where in the Code of Conduct does it say anything about what you or anyone was or now is? That argument is just a dodge to avoid the issue: in the Code of Conduct, race and religion are equivalent.

So if people can refer to Jesus as a Jewish zombie, right-wingers here should be allowed to refer to Obama as a monkey: both are ridiculously false, and both are intended as nothing but insult -- not critique, not discussion, just insult.
