Sorry, I'd rather live in a country where all speech is protected. Otherwise, who gets to decide which speech is hateful and which isn't?

Certainly some of the above posts would qualify.
 
If there is a deranged gunmen bent on killing Christians, tell him or her that the Phleps clan is the biggest Christian group on the planet. That way, at least when they're rotting in jail, they'll know it was for a good cause.
 
When I first heard the news about yesterdays events, one of my first thoughts was that Phelps and his klan were already packing for the trip.
 
I remember Fred from way back in early 90s when barely anyone knew his name. He is less terrifying to me now than then (maybe that's not such a good thing); however, I do believe in karma. There's no reason to hate the man - he will get what he deserves as dictated by his actions. I think it would be fair to say it won't be eternal, undying love. XXX

Doesn't that depend on who's doing the deciding? Suppose the censorship board was appointed by the President -- in this case George Bush? Still think it's a good idea?
 
Fight hate with love. Hate them, and you're doing much worse than playing into their hands- you're being the same as them.

Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. Who's paying for all these plane trips all over the place? And purchased at the last minute. Can't be the congregation -- they don't exactly look... rich.
 
It would indeed add insult to injury to have his flock go to Virginia. However, I think most people are already turned off by their lunacy and going to VT would really infuriate the country.

Well again, as I said in a different post, it would never work here -- you can be sure all the wrong people would be doing the censoring.

As for the funerals, I believe some local jurisdictions have passed ordinances saying something like you can't get within 500 yards or so of one -- specifically to exclude this group. Naturally, they then get exactly 500 yards away.

Laws governing free speech tend to be a slippery slope, and I don't think history has shown that they work very well. It's nearly impossible to write them so that you get the people who are truly objectionable, without snaring a lot of innocent citizens as well.

As for gun laws, please don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say anything about that. Don't make me start thinking you're another smug Canadian.
 
I gotta agree...I prefer to live in a country where all freedom of expression, no matter how vile, is protected by law. I'm also glad there's Canada, so people who like it the other way can live there. Nothing wrong with that...just not here.

Phelps is an ass but all he does when he does crap like this is piss people off and get good people riled up enough to take action. No one who thinks doesn't think he's a moron. It doesn't even qualify as hate speech as far as I'm concerned, just stupidity.

But, what an ass. I love how he thinks god punishes the wicked by shooting the innocent. What goes through these people's minds when they actually read the new testament?

When the only point of spreading information is to hurt an identifiable group... There's no need for it.
