Disney Introduces Its First Black Princess!

From just a ethnic perspective:

I guess Pocahontas isnt considered a Disney princess is she? She wasnt white she was American Indian. Also what about Jasmine, she was Arabian.

There are now officially 9 Disney Princesses:

Snow White
Cinderella
Aurora
(from Sleeping Beauty)
Ariel
Belle
Jasmine

Recently Pocahontas & Mulan have been added to the list depite not being actual princesses in their respective flims (though some say since Pocahontas was the Chief's daughter she was officially a princess)

And now, of course, Maddy from "The Frog Princess"

Despite each being from different films, all the Princesses have distinct similarities. All of them are leads in their respective movies (with the exception of Princess Jasmine), all have the ability to communicate with animals (displaying a sign of goodness towards all creatures), all have beautiful singing voices, and all have a love interest that is resolved at the end of their movies. The first three (Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora) are victims of misfortune until their happy endings; the others (whose movies were created in the late 20th century) have strong personas and seek adventure in the unknown world. Unsurprisingly, all of the Princesses are known for their beauty in both their movies and the real world.

Here's some fun factoids about the movie:

The film promises to return to the Broadway-style musical in the likes of the successful Disney animated films such as Walt's classics, and Disney's musical renaissance of the late '80s and all of the '90s.

In February 2007, it was reported that Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose are currently top contenders for the voice of the film's title character, and that Alicia Keys directly contacted Disney's studio chief Dick Cook, telling him that she wanted the role very much. (I've also heard Beyonce's name tossed around in an article I read.......)

List of characters:

* Maddy - A 19-year-old chambermaid.
* Charlotte La Bouff - An 18-year-old spoiled, southern Debutante and Diva.
* Dr. Duvalier - An African American Voodoo magician/fortune teller. The villain of the movie.
* Mama Odie - An elderly, 200-year-old Voodoo priestess/fairy god-mother.
* Ray - A lovesick Cajun firefly.
* Louis - A Jazz singer alligator.
* Prince Harry - A gregarious, fun-loving European Prince, in his early twenties.
* Lawrence - Prince Harry's pompous valet.
* Big Daddy La Bouff - Wealthy, Southern plantation landowner and father of Charlotte La Bouff.
* Eudora - Maddy's mother. In her fifties. Used to be Charlotte's nurse maid.
* George - The La Bouff family's cook.
* Little Arila - Maddy's little sister. She's little, but very smart.

I mean it's nice, but I mean, I don't see the big deal since it's not like they only had white princess' the whole time. Like Princess Jasmine from Aladdin. I guess the focus is because she'll be the main character?

Pretty much, yes.

A little generic (Mushu and Crickee?), but still awesome. A jazz-singing alligator? :=D:

The reason the Disney 'Princesses' were mostly caucasian was that the stories were derived from classic stories that were European. That's why Pocahontas, Jasmine, etc., are not...because their stories called for a type just as the European stories did. To read more into the choices is really to overthink the whole thing. (I would assume the frog will be some shade of green...unless he's French:).)

That doesn't change the fact that there's yet to be a black one. And doesn't change the fact that now that there is going to be one--that it's newsworthy.

cha, thanx for clearing that up, but you're completely missing the point.. it doesn't matter what a bunch of gay guys on jub think about it (i always love the witches in those stories anyway), the point is that 6 year old girls will get a different kind of message for a change.. it's about shaping their perceptions of who they are and who they can become.. but i guess as a white, gay, man, as long as it doesn't benefit you in some way, then it must automatically be trite and insignificant.. i swear some ppl here simply refuse to look at things outside theyre own little bubble..

I'm sorry to have offended your six-year-old female sensibilities, but my point was that the Disney Chicks were portrayed the way they were for a valid reason, based upon the stories that the characters were derived from. An adult might have understood that. I wouldn't expect my seven-year-old niece to hold up ANY of the characters as a role model, but YMMV.

That WOULD be awesome! Anyway, I think it's cool that there is now a black person in the movies. But 2009? Why so far away?
It takes two years to produce any feature length animated motion picture. Hell, it takes 10 months to animate a single episode of The Simpsons.

This should be cool, though.

That's great they are reviving their cartoon animation department. I hope it's a good film.

ok, i admit i went on a more general rant when i'd responded, but seriously, disney has completely reworked every faerie tale they've adapted over the last 75 years, and they've altered original stories like 'the little mermaid' beyond recognition.. a black princess would've been a relatively small variation by comparison.. whether we like it or not, these movies are important to girls.. there's really no justification for not having a black heroin before now..

But why are you being so defensive? Nobody said Disney was hateful and racist for having a bunch of white Princesses before. Why'd you think you needed to, so condescendingly, set us straight?
