Phone distraction. I've done the "autopilot" thing several times, and looked into it: your mind it actually aware of the things around you and is handling them competently... it just isn't bothering to inform your conscious mind of the process.
 
The signals enter your brain and are processed through immediate short term memory, but never make it to the filing cabinet.
 
A computer can only multi task if it has more than 1 processor. But that's not bad, because the processor typically waits for the other parts to do their jobs :)
