Dixie Chicks Win 5 Grammys, Bush Turns Off TV and Goes to Bed

Re: Dixie Chicks Win 4 Grammys, Bush Turns Off TV and Goes to Bed

I still think that the tactic they used, blasting the president of the United States in front of a friendly crowd of British fans who similarly hated Bush wasn't a wise thing to do,or a brave thing....doing it in front of their own American fans,in Red State America...would have demonstrated more courage and principle. How are you courageous when you say something virtually the whole crowd is going to say Amen to....and not think you were going to escape without any consequences at home?

God forbid that an entertainer should play to her crowd. The fact is that she made her comment on the eve of the Iraq occupation (which, distressingly enough, was nearly four years ago, but that's a discussion for another thread) so one might argue that it had more to do with timing than location. It's not as if she made the remark in France, I mean the British were and remain involved as one of the US' few remaining allies.

And the courage and principle result from the fact that they did not back down from the position. I saw the Chicks in Dallas in June 2003, and while there was a bit of tension outside the Am Airlines Center, inside the seats were packed and Natalie made it clear that she was no fan of the President or his lying war. These comments were greeted with some boos, some cheers, and mostly indifference -- which is obviously a huge part of the problem our country faces and why I think it's important for people who have that sort of stage to speak their minds. I don't like Toby Keith, I find him nearly as offensive as Bill O'Reilly, but I respect that he has a voice and has used it. More conversation could have saved us all from the heartache and loss of our so-called President's war.

Congrats to the talented, hard working and courageous Dixie Chicks.

:=D:

They exemplify the best of America.

When I listen to this song I always think of my bf, the love of the first half of my life, who served two tours in Vietnam.

Snapcat, I know from your past posts that you are a big fan of the Dixie Chicks. I don't know their music that well, but honestly, I would not buy anything by them because of their aforementioned quote and the venue in which it was given. I don't know what President Bush said about them either, and I don't care.

The thing that you have to hand to the Dixie Chicks is that they have been consistent in their Bush hatred. The music industry was nowhere to be found when the Chicks' fanbase deserted them. It is only now, when public opinion on the war is so negative that the industry elected to raise its head. I suspect (although, since I don't know their music, this is just speculation) that these awards have something to do with rewarding the DC's for their "courage". This shows how narcissistic the industry is...anyone can be against something when it is popular to be against it.

On the other hand, I don't think what the Chicks did was that "courageous". If the entertainment industry was to come out and, say, make a movie about Theo Van Gogh, that would be courageous. Or if the industry were to vigorously support the Danish political cartoonists, that would be courageous.

And I don't take "death threats" against country music artists that seriously. Most or all entertainers with whom I am familiar who have been murdered were killed by deranged fans.

Radical Islam death threats I take seriously; hence, my unwavering support for President Bush and the War in Iraq.

They've not said they hate Bush. They disapprove of his policies and they're critical of his incompetence.

What's courageous about a movie about Van Gogh or supporting Danish political cartoonists???

Speaking out and refusing to back down despite heavy pressure to do so, being banished from important radio stations, losing income and fans and playing to smaller venues, living with death threats, and then writing a song that says I'm not going to make nice -- that's courageous.

And I don't take "death threats" against country music artists that seriously. Most or all entertainers with whom I am familiar who have been murdered were killed by deranged fans.
You're mighty cavalier about other people's death threats.

Some think it's deranged to make a death threat because someone says they're ashamed the President came from their home state. Never know what someone will do when their response is irrational.

Radical Islam death threats I take seriously; hence, my unwavering support for President Bush and the War in Iraq.
There were no radical Islam death threats to us from Iraq when Bush started a war there.

I respect your opinion, Nick, but I disagree with just about everything you say.

Re: Dixie Chicks Win 4 Grammys, Bush Turns Off TV and Goes to Bed

Chance, can you name one other President that has criticized a musical act?

George Bush is the only one that comes to my mind.

Nixon called the Carpenters "Young America at its finest!"

Considering the source, I'd call that a pretty nasty slam against two nice, wholesome kids who always called their mother from the road!

"Waaaaaaahhhhhh....Close to yoooooooooou...."

;)

I'm sorry, but the Dixie Chicks got exactly what they deserved. They publicly criticized the war effort and the president on the eve of the invasion, which wouldn't have been so bad for their career if they weren't country music stars. The country music fanbase is notoriously known for being conservative. So naturally when you alienate your fanbase then you'll get boycotted. The Chicks were fully within their right to publicly criticize the president, and all their listeners were perfectly within their right to not purchase dixie chicks mechandise.

I doubt the gals are starving.

And I'm guessing people will know who the Dixie Chicks are for a lot longer than, say, SheDaisy.

That's gotta be worth something.

I was really happy for the Chicks when their protesters started destroying their CDs. The fools didn't realize they had to BUY the CDs to destroy them. It just upped the Chicks income.
And I'm so happy for them for their Grammy wins. It just shows they can do it without being played on country radio. I'm a C/W fan from way back and just wish that radio would wise up and play them again.
Now that everybody knows that Natalie was right, I wish things would get back to normal.

^ Take a look at the "Shut Up & Sing" trailer I posted above. You'll find some of his comments there.

They shouldn't have their feelings hurt cause some folks don't want to buy their records

that's what GWB said

then Natalie said "What a dumb motherfucker"

thanks for the heads up snap - glad I saw it

frankly GWB is showing a lot more class than Ms. Maine - who obviously was never taught manners

Get over it.

Say what y'all want about the Dixie Chicks. They're from the Dallas area, and I love 'em!

Here's what another Texan had to say on the matter of the Dixie Chicks last summer, and his opinion is the only one that matters to this Texan!

Willie: Dixie Chicks 'got a raw deal'

Updated 7/31/2006 10:29 AM ET

NEW YORK (AP) — Willie Nelson says the Dixie Chicks "got a raw deal" from a disapproving public following their criticism of President Bush.

"I think the fact that they were overseas and onstage had a little bit to do with it because you're speaking to other people about our business," the 73-year-old country crooner said in an interview in this week's Time magazine.

The trio caught harsh criticism after lead singer Natalie Maines told a London audience in 2003 that the group was "ashamed" Bush was from their home state of Texas.

Nelson said he was surprised his remarks about Bush a year earlier during an overseas news conference didn't incite a similar controversy.

"I said 'He's not from Texas and he ain't a cowboy, so let's stop trashin' Texans and cowboys.' It got a little chuckle, but I didn't get run out of the country," Nelson told the magazine.

Nelson recently launched his own XM Radio channel and published The Tao of Willie, in which he offers his philosophy on subjects ranging from marijuana to war.

I suppose if Toby Keith had won 5 Grammy Awards last night we wouldn't be having this conversation.

God Bless Texas, and God Bless the Dixie Chicks! ..|

Right you are texpatriot.
God Bless Texas, and God Bless the Dixie Chicks! and don't touch my Willie!!

^ I think you have a point there. If we were talking about the Dixie Guys instead of the Dixie Chicks I don't think we'd have seen such an uproar. But the fact that three women dared to rock the cart by having an opinion was just too much for all those men who think women ought to walk 2 steps behind them and have supper ready on the table when they get home.

No, I'd bet money some man in a stuffed white shirt was awfully glad to see the biggest selling female group of any musical genre get knocked down a few pegs. Wide Open Spaces sold more copies than any other country act in chart history, more than even Garth Brooks.

So, I definitely think there was some sexism at play.

And anyone who questions the patriotism of the Dixie Chicks because they made some comments about a guy who claims to be a Texan, who happens to be the President of the USA, can kiss my Texas ass!
