So here's my deal:

I've got a room...it's 20ft x 40 ft. I usually party with friends in it on the weekends, music, fun, etc.

I want to light it. And I know it's going to be overkill, but that's what I'm going for.

I was looking around online at various fixtures, such as those by American DJ, Chauvet, etc. but wanted some opinions from those who have first-hand experience. I'm looking more along the lines of scanners, with maybe a few other type fixtures thrown in there too.

I also want software control over the lights, to be able to create shows that I can sync to music and stuff.

My target budget for this project is $1,000, but I'm flexible to go up to $1,500 if necessary.

Any suggestions?

:D

I personally prefer American DJ. I started my DJ/Sound & Light company when I was 16 and I've got a full DMX controlled rig with scanners, LED pars, DMX controlled effects, and moving head lights...but, for your limited budget, I would recommend looking at either the ADJ ScanTron-250's ($169ea) or DJ Scan 250's ($199ea) for the scanners. I've got a couple ScanTrons, and for the price and the size room you're lighting, they're pretty good lights. You may want to look at getting some DMX controlled LED Par Cans to give the room a color wash and color change effect...but remember, you get what you pay for with most LED equipment! I run ADJ 64B LED PRO (a par64 fixture) which are $300 each, but you could go with a cheaper LED fixture from Chauvet or Elation for the size room you're lighting. Don't forget DMX cables! -- Do NOT use regular microphone cables...yes, they'll work, but interference and slower data rates that can occur with microphone cables will cause your DMX fixtures to occasionally become erratic! So spend the extra $$ on REAL DMX cables (ADJ AccuCables are good)

As for DMX Software, the cheapest pro software I've seen is ADJ's "My DMX"...it goes for $300, but it'll do pretty much everything that the more expensive software programs will do.

I wouldn't recommend buying any professional DJ equipment off of eBay. Remember, you WILL NOT get a manufacturers warranty on anything you purchase from eBay. The seller is most likely not an authorized dealer, so the manufacturer will just laugh at you if you encounter any problems! I go through ProSound & Stage Lighting (www.pssl.com) for all of my equipment and highly recommend them. You get free shipping (on most orders) and the best prices available, AND after-purchase phone support (helpful if you've never dealt with DMX fixtures before or ever have any problems).

Hope that helps! If you've got more questions, feel free to pick my brain :D

Wow dustyroads, thanks! I don't think your answer could have been anymore thorough lol. Thanks for the suggestion on the various fixtures. I mean, there's always a difference between how light shows up in pictures and in person, which is why I wanted to hear some feedback from the forum. I'll check out the stuff and let you all know how this project goes.

Thanks again!!

:D

Update:

So I placed the order yesterday for a bunch of stuff. Gotta say the people on the phone at PSSL were VERY polite and helpful, so I highly recommend them in the future. Maybe I'll post some pics and videos when the project is done. =]

So now I've got another question. I ordered MyDMX, dustyroads, how you suggested. I'm definitely gonna have some fun and get my feet wet with it. However, can you work with timelines in it? I'm used to working with timelines (like in Premiere and AfterEffects) so I definitely think I could get alot more done with lighting software that works with timeslines (like this: http://www.nicolaudie.com/main.php?id_page=4 ) which I randomly found.

Thoughts?

Hmm...It doesn't appear that it has a drag-and-drop timeline like the one in that link. I took a look at the manual on ADJs website and it looks like you can program scenes, steps, fades, etc and time them within each scene or step, but as far as a timeline, I don't believe that MyDMX has that. But it's a good start and something to play around with. If nothing else, you got a DMX-USB interface for your fixtures! PSSL does have a 45-day satisfaction guarantee...but I think with software once it's opened it's yours. So if you do want to upgrade to a more expensive software with the timeline feature, keep that in mind ..|

Good luck and have fun ;)
