@Blackbeltninja:

Actually, what you have proposed has happened in real life. I remember at least one case of a man who said he'd seen the winning numbers in a dream, and here's another one, for your pleasure.

Attention is drawn to Story #6:

I'll believe that.

Nothing from any professional psychics, though, or people claiming psychic ability. Those are the people I want to predict the lotto numbers.

We think they're phonies, too, Blackbelt. (In fact, I'd say they're "lying sacks of shit". ;) )

Joshua, Kulindahr, and I believe that the "real thing" doesn't work that way, i.e. it can't be called up "on demand".

I saw a psychic on the tube who drove the host of the show she was on crazy because she said the same thing we're saying: it doesn't happen on demand. She described it as being like peripheral vision, which normally doesn't tell us much more than, "Hey -- there's something there", but every now and then is clear enough we can actually tell what it is. She said most of what she saw boiled down to "something interesting is going to happen Tuesday in Boston" type things, vague enough she couldn't even match an interesting event in the known time and place to what she'd seen, and many times she wouldn't understand what she'd seen until afterwards when she saw a news report.
So the host asked her that if she ever saw the winning lottery numbers, to give him a call.

I don't believe in that stuff. Besides I wouldn't want to know my future if they could predict it. You make your own destinies anyway.

Given how the gift works (or fails to), I can just see an honest reading.

"Clean out your garage soon, because in about three weeks you're going to have to climb up and get rid of a hornet's nest. You can't stop it, but you can make it easier to deal with."
"You've been putting off resealing the main bathroom floor. Get to it, because next week you're going to drop a massive load that will plug the toilet so it overflows. Or you could move the model train table so it won't get dripped on."
"Your son is keeping his porn under your wife's old cookbooks. Better retrieve it because she's going to dig down to find an old family recipe, before Tuesday. There's some you might want to keep for yourself."
"No, I don't know the winning lottery numbers. But I can see the house number of the next winner . . . "

You make your own destinies anyway.

Insomuch as you make your own decisions, and decisions have consequences, (he said, bumping his own thread... ;) )

But who is to say WHY you made that decision in the first place, and no consequence is guaranteed.

Yes, if you - for example - start shooting up heroin there's a fairly good chance that you're signing your own death certificate, but what led you to that decision in the first place ?

I'm not so sure that our fates aren't sealed from the moment we are born. Pre-written, if you will. And that a small amount of people out there are born with a gift of perception that the vast majority of us do not have.

I believe in the possibility that fate predestines a plan for us, but that we have the conscious choice to deviate from that plan.

If, for example, I have a dream that I will get into a raging war of words with Miss X, and three weeks later, I see the events in the dream hatching right before my very eyes, I can remember the dream I'd had that foresaw this fight—and choose an alternate future.

Interesting.

So, is "fate" a living, "breathing" entity, or something that we can't understand from our third dimensional viewpoint ?

The concept that "it" can "predestin" a plan for our lives implies that there is a separate intelligence at work.

Then again, maybe we're assigning a life force to randomness.

Is reality perception, or perception our own realities ?

Oy ! #-o

Maybe the bottom line is that there are some things we are not meant to know.

I have a fun view on human existance;

While I follow a primarily scientific belief, I am Christian. However I also keep my mind open to things that cannot be explained.

Remember, the truth is usually stranger than fiction and the majority of the 'paranormal' if not fake things could simply be parts of life that we have yet to work out (just like science and medicine in the past).

Saying that though, I do not believe in psychics.

While I believe that some people might have abilities to sense things that others cannot, if it did extend to things that are commonly expressed as 'psychic' abilities, I would not expect it to be something that can be relied upon regularly and at will.

edit: A good quote I can't remember where it was from though.
"to see if a psychic is real, wait until they die and check their diary to see if they had anything planned for the day after"

Anyone believe they're going to get $7,500,000 from a deceased Nigerian royal?....... #-o
