  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do different kinds of alcohol influence you differently?

My brother calls tequila the anger juice - and yeah, if he's shooting it he's gonna pick a fight.

I suspect that has a lot more to do with why he's drinking - and choosing beverage accordingly, than what he's drinking.

If he's not looking to get drunk, he generally sticks with beer. If he's looking to get drunk, he's already pissed off. But I suppose it's easier to blame it on Jose Cuervo.

Myself, they're all about the same, except Champagne, which will get me drunk real fast.

(for all you amateurs out there still drinking Patron, try this, Smoother, more complex, no bite :

Back in ye olden dayes, I can say Yes, different alcohols could produce different moods. Gin, for example, could make me bitchy; brandy and wine made me mellow; schnapps made me silly; tequila made me mean. I never drank beer, so that doesn't compute. But in the end, it was all the same thing. It might just have been the mood I was already in leading me to choose liquors that went along with it.

And I hate to be an old nanny-goat, but drinking in order to make yourself feel a particular way is often a sign of addiction, present or future. You can't tailor your emotions, not with drink or drugs or food or sex or shopping, and it's dangerous to try. Just feel the way you feel, drink something that tastes good, and be yourself.

I understand your concern, but I'd like to point out that I'm not necessarily drinking in ORDER to feel that way, but rather, acknowledging that certain drinks have different influences, and I'd rather have one over the other right now. For example, if I was going out on a date, and maybe wanted it to be a little romantic or whatever, wine would probably be the best option, no? I'm merely saying that I'm going out and, I don't want a typical baseline beer buzz, so I'm switching it with something that will likely induce a different buzz. I don't actually drink very often, and as I said in my first post, rarely get drunk. I'm actually quite satisfied with how this thread has turned out - turns out whatever I read, according to general opinion, about all alcohol having the same affect was totally wrong.

Or maybe it's just about a persons mental associations regarding different kinds of alcohol.

Is wine "romantic" because there is something inherently chemically romance inducing about wine? Have all cultures who ever produced wine observed this effect? (that would be no) I find that an odd thought, because if you could empirically and consistently bottle romance, you'd be the richest person on earth.

Or is it romantic because you saw a thousand different images of people drinking wine and associating it with romance?

No two wines are chemically identical. Hell no two vintages are chemically identical. So if it's an empirical quality of wine to induce romance, which wine is it? I for one would love to know.

Everything just makes me drunk, unable to stand straight and usually pretty loud and touchy feely.

No matter what it is, the results are all the same.

Everything?

EVERYTHING?

Even water or Grape Soda?

Even crab legs, bananas, Vegemite...

...Thunderstorms, pavement, zoos, Parliament, root canals?

Even :sex: ?? (Oops sorry, got carried away...LOL)

It's interesting, though, seeing that for some people there are different types of being drunk depending on which alcoholic beverage is used. As mentioned above, I've never noticed a difference with me.

I haven't dabbed that much in alcohol but so far...

Whiskey either gets me angry(sometimes) then horny or vice-versa.
Vodka just enhances me times 10 making me more social and exciting...only blacked out from it twice because i took too many shots in a short period of time.

Just before I quit drinking, I'd be fine all night on beer and ale,but I rarely drank only beer or ale.Usually about the 3rd or 4th beer and then I'd start in with the Scotch.I had good days and bad days lol..Most nights drinking would end with me coming to some time early in the morning with no memory of half the night..

I do know that Tequilla seems to get me into trouble.I'd seem after a few shots of it,my ''will every asshole in the room please fuck with me'' light would come on,and before I knew it,some guy would come up and say something about my mothers twat.Next thing I know,we're rolling on the floor.Tequilla was soon nixed from the drinking roster..

Jack Daniels was another favorite of mine and I drank that shit like it was my job.I usually had a good time on it.The hangovers were kinda brutal though. Then one morning, as I was dry heaving up my spleen- that was it.No more J.D. To this day, even the smell of it gives me juicy mouth..

For a while,I was on a Bacardi and Coke thing, then I burnt out on that.I don't know why.I don't remember any real scenes from rum.

Vodka was another blackout inducer for me.I drank that for a couple of years.I liked it with seven up and a little cranberry.Good stuff.I've crashed cars, gotten in fights, gotten arrested on more than a couple of vodka nights. Then little by little, I kinda stopped drinking it..

Glasses of Jaegermeister on the rocks to sip while I drank my beer became a staple for a couple more years. That went ok for the most part.Had a few scenes, but nothing too outrageous.

Then little by little, I started in with Scotch, mostly Johnnie Red, then switching to Johnnie Black because I found it smoother and the morning after wasn't as rough.Dewars would be fine as well.

Towards the end of my ''drinking life'' a great book by Pete Hamill by the way..Amazon.com: A Drinking Life: A Memoir eBook: Pete Hamill: Kindle Store I just found I couldn't handle it anymore.None of it.The blackouts, the hangovers, all the bullshit that goes with a lifetime of alcoholism.I gave it up.As Pete said in the book, ''I just don't have a talent for it.."

Good on you, K! You are fortunate, not everybody succeeds in beating the addiction. I am very happy for you.

As long as I'm drinking one type of alcohol in a night, I'm generally ok. Start mixing hard liquor and beer, I'm a weepy wreck.

All alcohol has the same effect on me.

I'll get flirty/talkative and relaxed the more I drink, but once I hit a certain limit I'll start to feel a bit blue.

I said I would use it on a romantic occasion because there is something a little bit different about being wine drunk, I'm not saying I know what it is, but it seems like several people here have echoed that sentiment. It makes me feel wistful, basically.

Different hangover effects are real. There are higher-order alcohols, besides pure ethanol, in most distilled drinks. Whiskey, bourbon, dark rum, etc.

The body has enzymes specifically designed to break down ethanol. When they break down the higher-order alcohols, they produce toxins. It is these toxins that cause hangover.

Each drink has a different combination of higher-order alcohols, which is why the hangover effects (at least) vary from drink to drink. Different people are sensitive to different toxins to different degrees, so different people have different hangovers on different drinks.

This is also why "the hair of the dog" works. The enzymes designed for ethanol attack it preferentially, so drinking a small* amount of vodka (the spirit with the lowest proportion of higher-order alcohols**) partially prevents the release of the breakdown toxins for a while. Plenty of water helps the higher-order alcohols be excreted before they're broken down.

Different DRUNK effects I don't know much about. For me, the only one I've ever noticed is that when I drink Guinness I acquire an Irish accent. I tend to attribute this to the power of suggestion, myself! :-)

* We're talking like HALF a shot. More than that and you're just getting drunk again.
** Also, the better the vodka, the fewer higher-order alcohols. Everclear will not help you.

My theory= Confirmed. Though it was a bit obvious lol.

Jack Daniels or Wild Turkey? I'm fine, bopping around and having a ball! I'll still be awake and laughing at 3.00 am.

White wine? I'll have a great night to start but by about 2300hrs I'm dropping off to sleep.

So yes, depending on the alcohol, my reaction will change.

Red wine: Mellow, relaxed drunkeness, quiet finish

White wine: Silly/fun at first, but tired or messy finish

Beer: Fun, takes a long time before I get tired. Seldom ends up messy

Champagne/sparkling wine: Fast effect, very silly, need to go home early

Spirits: No thanks

oh yes definitely, just had about 8 shots of Captain Morgan and I'm not feeling anything whatsoever. >.>
