Do Guys with Substance exist?

Atleast for online friendships and relationships I have to use an outside source on this one: World of Warcraft. I know it's the definition of digital addiction but it boasts the best online social atmosphere one has to offer (non-sexual that is). I have met people from all over the US and the world playing and even have met some in RL. Yes it is just a game but half the fun of it is just speaking to people from all over. We all come from different backgrounds, different ages, sexes etc. to play a game together. I have made some friendships that have lasted 3 years. Even when I stopped playing for 8 months and then started playing again, they welcomed me back in and we played catch up and talked about what we had done since then.

At least for WoW compared to other social atmospheres, the people there are not flakey because you pay to play. So you get to chat and "hang out" with them almost everyday, that it almost becomes a family. Obviously it is not gay themed or a hook-up area (but surprisingly alot of couples play).

As for online relationships, they are literally long-distance relationships. Anyone who has been in one can tell you that they almost never work out. Sure it's always interesting to meet new people and talk to get to know each other, but without some devoution, expect them not to last too long. I have had one for about 7 months but then I just stopped talking. About a year later I get a message saying he wanted to chat again, and we did for about 3 months but after that, we stopped again. I'm not gonna hold my breath for him. I would take online relationships with a grain of salt.

P.S. This was not a shameless plug for World of Warcraft but rather an anecdote about online socialization.
