do new yorkers exist here?

NYC was named the most courteous big city in the world.

Below is a ranking of the most courteous to the least courteous -- 35 major cities included in RD's Global Courtesy Test. Figures reflect the percentage of people who passed in each city. When multiple cities had identical scores, they are listed in alphabetical order.

This study reveals more about the U.S. than it does about New York, since the researchers went to the largest city in each of 35 countries, except for Canada, where Quebec was considered a separate country. No other cities in the U.S. were considered, and New York was taken as representative of the U.S. Note that this study names Asia the rudest continent, but that may be because Western standards of courtesy were used. At best, it is a controversial and admittedly unscientific study.

According to another study done in the U.S. only, Portland, Oregon is the most courteous U.S. city, and Miami is the rudest, followed by NYC. Different standards were used - mostly to do with traffic. I did find crossing the street in NYC to be much more hazardous than in California, where pedestrians take their time crossing the street and are never honked at (in my experience). However, for danger in crossing streets, NYC cannot compare to Mexico City where no ever dares cross a street without running at full speed, including little old ladies.

I have always found it easier to talk with stranger in bars in NYC than almost any other place, besides Houston and New Orleans. What I like about NYers is that they will talk to anyone and always have something to say. I did find people in Houston (and the South in general) to be more polite, however.

NYers like to make a game out of sarcasm, for their own and other's enjoyment, and some people mistake this for rudeness. I mostly find it entertaining. I've noticed people in U.K. (especially Wales) do the same.

omg, thats me! .. except... umm.. i also like to insult people, but its mostly innocent like ... making fun of general mistakes in how they say things. i laugh at people that say "pop" and not soda, and its not to be mean, its jus cause i find it funny.

When I lived in San Francisco, most of my friends/roommates were Italian NYers, and it took me a while to get used to their sense of humor, since I had only lived in Texas before. Once I understood that they were doing it out of affection, I learned to appreciate it. They make the best comedians, although my mother has still not learned to appreciate it. My favorite example of this was Gilda Radner's Roseanne Roseannadanna, but you're too young to be familiar with that.
