  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do people speak more openly/truthfully when they're drunk?

I think definitely. It affects their thinking and they just blabber whatever's on their mind.

I got completely trashed and said some nasty things to my brother and we didn't talk for about 8 months. Reckon family always know how to push your buttons quite easily when they want to. We kind of mended bridges this past holiday break but it's still a work in progress.

I can't stand people who tell the truth only because they are drunk.

I have gotten majorly hurt by someone who did that once. It fucking sucks. Not because the cat is finally out of the bag, but for leading me on, telling me everything is fine.

And I am the worst kind of drunk. I will giggle at everything. It was a really awkward conversation.

Isn't there some sort of scientific study or report floating around the Internet about this? Thought I read alcohol stimulates the same spot in the brain as honesty. Didn't bother looking into it because I frankly don't care about neuroscience. >.>

Alcohol lowers inhibitions and removes a lot of fears and self doubts. I always found when I was drunk I'd say things I'd never have had the courage to say sober.

This. It provides disinhibition. That said, the person will not only tell the truth but also foul things and other glitches they will not utter while sober. Thus you cannot actually infer drunktalks as always true; they can be nothing but meaningless points.

I needed liquid confidence to come out to my parents. Yes, booze can make someone more honest in their actions and what they're saying some of the time. I've found I am more likely to come up with less plausable and less honest reasons for not going home with someone when drunk though. I think it might have something to do with what the drunk person wants. I wanted to tell my parents I am not straight, that is what I did when drunk. I've lied when drunk to someone(s) I do not want to wake up next to.

I needed liquid confidence to come out to my parents.

I actually took a sleeping pill which makes me kinda high if I'm still up 20 minutes after taking it.

I did it intentionally because I've always had a problem with anxiety and this pill always got me rid of it completely (even anti-anxiety pills never worked that well).

I would either confront the person and ask them to be truthful, if not, hold their peace. Or, I would just brush it off as the person being inebriated, spewing nonsense and all!

Whenever I got drunk I dance with everyone!

Perhaps you're referring to the amygdala complex?

I once read a paper on this topic, but had strong doubt for its legitimacy. It essentially said that alcohol inhibits the part of your brain that sends alarm signals when you're about to do something irresponsible (amygdala). The signals that would ordinarily cause you to reconsider your words/actions don't get heard, so you are uninhibited and more inclined to verbalise thoughts you would otherwise keep to yourself.

I was skeptical when reading it, as decision making is a very complicated process that can't be isolated to one brain network or region. Yes, the amygdala is most probably involved in providing a signal when you're about to act carelessly, and alcohol is a general inhibitor, but I would say it's highly misleading to assert that the alcohol targets the amygdala specifically (as the paper did).

I'm a little tired right now, and it may not even be the study you're referring to, but I'll try to find the source tomorrow if I have time.

I know some people who have a tendency to be more open/honest when drunk. I guess for me it really just depends on the situation. Being depressed and stressed while drinking made me a bit more open when I was drunk one time. But other times I'm just either dancing all over the place or tired as fuck and don't talk about private shit.

See? If you had been drinking you would have been able to just accept the conclusions of that paper without questioning its validity….

i believe people are far more truthful because they are less inhibited by their minds. however, i dont usually take what they say as gospel unless they say it while they are not under the influence of alcohol.

Expecto patronum!
