I have been hearing about these things called Poopers and see that there are web site "pooping" up selling them.
Do they really work and what the heck are they???

Poppers (not poopers!) are an inhalable drug - usually amyl nitrite - which is supposed to enhance sexual pleasure. At one university I know this compound used to be available in the labs (as it is part of an immediate treatment for cyanide poisoning), and it used to get stolen, indicating that some do believe it works - I have no personal experience of its effects. You will often see them marketted as other things (like Video Head Cleaner) as it is illegal to sell drugs.

Good for JayJay! He correctly identified the drug as amyl nitrite. Many people incorrectly call it amyl nitrate, which is a different chemical. That may not matter to most of us, but chemists will tell you it's an important distinction.

Originally amyl nitrite was prescribed by doctors for heart problems. It was marketed in little glass ampules, which the patient would break open to sniff the contents. When you broke an ampule it made a popping sound -- hence the name.

This is from Wikipedia:

Amyl nitrite, in common with other alkyl nitrites, is a potent vasodilator that functions as a source of nitric oxide, which signals for relaxation of the involuntary muscles. Physical effects include decrease in blood pressure, headache, flushing of the face, increased heart rate, dizziness, and relaxation of involuntary muscles, especially the blood vessel walls and the anal sphincter. There are no withdrawal symptoms. Overdose symptoms include nausea, emesis (vomiting), hypotension, hypoventilation, dyspnea (shortness of breath), and syncope (fainting). Clinically, amyl nitrite is prescribed for unstable angina [4] and acute cyanide poisoning.

Today amyl nitrite is sold only by prescription in the US. But various related nitrites are sold under brand names like Rush and Locker Room. They include butyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite, isoamyl nitrite and isopropyl nitrite. They are sold in little bottles and people still call them poppers, even though they don't pop anymore. You simply unscrew the top and sniff. Depending on where you live, they may be available in adult book stores or DVD stores.

Enough of the chemistry lesson! I'm neither a chemist nor a doctor. Just a reasonably informed citizen.

What do poppers do?

Although it's still not clearly understood how, exactly, amyl works, what happens when it does sure is.

Once inhaled, it triggers a quick jump in heart rate and drop in blood pressure and relaxes smooth muscle tissue. At the same time, it shuts off oxygen to the inner brain, producing a sudden, intense weakness and dizziness lasting 2-3 minutes. Sweating and flushing may also occur.

Still, if you need it, amyl nitrite is good medicine -- or was, before it was replaced by newer drugs. In fact, the drug was so effective -- and so relatively safe -- that it was sold over the counter for years, packaged in small mesh-covered vials.

As time passed, though, amyl eventually found a larger market, one with healthy hearts -- particularly once word spread that the drug seemed to intensify sexual orgasm. Users dubbed the vials "poppers" and "snappers," due to the sound they made when crushed, and snapped up what they could from pharmacies.

And even though amyl nitrite isn't an aphrodisiac and doesn't help in treating sexual problems, it quickly gained a reputation as a "love drug," especially among gay men.

I have used poppers and enjoyed them. But I'm convinced that it's best to use them sparingly. They give you an immediate "rush" that can feel awesome -- no question about it. And they can help give you a more intense orgasm. But they can also make you feel temporarily disoriented. A little goes a long way, and there are dangers associated with them. People with anemia or high blood pressure are especially at risk, and some doctors tell their patients never to use them.

All I can say is that if you want to try them, go easy. Your health matters more than a temporary thrill.

Amyl nitrite has been barred as ingredient in poppers for about 20 years. It has been replaced by several nitrites, such as butyl nitrites, etc. These nitrites eventually got barred. I do not know what they use in the present products. But it is not amyl nitrate in the US. Read the labels for current information.

And, as I'm a chemist, I agree that the distinction is important, and usually correct the incorrect use of 'nitrate' instead of 'nitrite' when I see the mistake made! :) ..|

I have used poppers before ... I think the first time I ever used them, it was the most intense rush I ever felt. I also remember using them once with this guy with whom I hooked up on Manhunt. There was a dim purple lightbulb in the corner and fuck-music playing ... it was certainly memorable and I came everywhere ... not that I am advocating poppers, despite how appealing I made them sound ...

In moderation, I don't see the harm in using them. You really don't want to use them everytime you have sex ... as I am not sure what psychological addiction some people would have to them.

I don't use them anymore .. I really don't need to enhance my orgasms with the boyfriend now ... :-<

The "high" lasts for only a few seconds .. I would say 15 seconds (??) ... so you'll find yourself sniffing the bottle a few times during sex.

So, doyou have a recommended brand?

I didn't know guys still used these! I tried like 10 years ago. They make your neck pulsate and it feels like you are on the verge of fainting. It can be intense. But I always hated seeing guys carry them around everywhere in the bar while everyone took a wiff. I thought is was so unclassy. My friend said that in the 70's they were way better and were different. A lot stronger I guess? You can buy it at stores as video tape cleaner I think?

I also have a question....

Does it also loosen you up, make it easier for you to be fucked?

In theory yes. I don't know that there are any controlled studies to prove it or disprove it though.

I'd personally stay away from them... but I'm pretty much anti-street drugs. They aren't completely benign

meh, i tried them once for fun. it's true, the rush's incredible, but it only lasts for a couple seconds - at least with me it was like that - and i kept wanting more, but it felt like i was raping my nose, so i decided to stop and not use them again. it's a very warm feeling, though, gets ya all riled up for sex.

I've tried them before sex and it didn't give me an increase in my sexual pleasure but it did loosen me up and relaxed me. I did hear once that if you use them before sex, it can increase your chances of getting an STD? Is this even true?

The stench is awful and so is the ensuing headache. The stuff simply does not do anything good to me whatsoever. I also know that a lot of guys really love it and use it all the times. It works for some and it doesn't work for the others.

I have been in Spain for several weeks now and here, everything is well, a bit different...

I'd hook up with a dude, we'll start getting at it and he'll ask, if I had any poppers?

Case at hand that I neither like them nor do I need them, my answer is always truthful and negative.

About half of the dudes so far, grew pretty upset and left in utter indignation!!!

WTF, if you need your rush stuff, that's just fine with me, take it with you...don't expect the others to cater for your needs.

Living in the UK they are freely available in most gay clubs/bars and sex shops.

I will keep this pretty short. Basically yes, they do work. While they don't make penetration physically easier (ie if your really super tight then it wont make it any easier for him to push in) however it does reduce the amount of pain giving the illusion that its easier. It does make you relax though, which may aid penetration a little, but no more than if you relaxed naturally anyway. You get a huge rush that feels awesome, and it also increases the sexual pleasure you feel several fold.

Sadly the effects only last a short time. Up to about a minute at most. They usually give you a blistering headache after a few uses too.

Were popular back in the late 70's and 80's it was believed at one time they were link to AIDS and was never proven. Have used them in the past on rare occasion found them being used in baths they do give you rush and when jacking you shoot extra load. With any drug go easy and have fun.

This guy I hooked up with told me he used poppers to relax and get his sphincter relaxed so he could get fucked...if he didn't sniff them he said he couldn't take a cock up his ass...anyway he sniffed them and got in all fours and I started fucking him...I was afraid to sniff cuz I thought I was going to lose my erection...so I tried just for the heck of it and I got dizzy felt the rush through my body and instead of getting relaxed I got this rage and started fucking the poor guy like crazy to the point that he asked me to stop cuz I was hurting him; he turned on his back and started jacking off and came I kept jacking off and couldn't cum...I finally did after like 10 mins, and the orgasm was very intense...I left his place and I was still dizzy and had a huge headache...but I enjoyed the sex very much... I think like everything it affects everybody in different ways.

I think this is a thing that must effect different people very differently. I use them pretty consistently. LIke a lot of stuff, the intensity is not as much now as when I first encountered them. At the right place, right time, etc., I think it can be *tons* of fun, but other times, they're sort of sickening in the ways others have described them. I think it's possible for that for some people, they alter "judgment" about what you will/won't do, and just for that, I think there's reason to be cautious. I did find them helpful if I wanted to bottom.
