  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
    Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do you bite your nails?

Nope, I've got nailclippers for that.

No, because I don't know where my fingers have been.

Don't bite them anymore. It was a TERRIBLE problem with me when I was young. (Even chomped on the toe nails, too.) My fingers (and toes) were terrible sights. It took one HELL of a time for me to stop, but I finally did.

It's one of my habits I wish I could stop immediately.

I used to as a kid, but not in a very long time. When you do, you're left with jagged edges that catch on everything!

My Mum stopped me doing this at an early age by using something called 'bitter alum'. It was a liquid which came in a little bottle with a brush in the cap.

You paint your nails with the clear liquid and let it dry. Then if you absent-mindedly put your fingers in your mouth, you get the strong bitter taste. Eventually you can get out of the habit if you persist.

That was a squillion years ago. Hardly anything turns up on Google (my searching sucks anyway), but this should work as well-

Find 'styptic pencils' from a pharmacy or old-style household store. Moisten one and rub it on your nails and let dry.

{edit- dry the styptic pencil each time or it'll dissolve}

[styptic pencils are great for stopping bleeding from shaving cuts, but are now harder to find. They're made of alum]
