  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do you consider "straight pride" T-shirts offensive?

Always remember that pride is the deadliest of the 7 deadly sins.

And it goeth before a fall.

I disagree. I think they're intrinsically offensive, and the difference between the two wearers you describe is that the first one isn't aware of how offensive it is.

Question for comparison: if some dumb kid wore a "GOD HATES FAGS" t-shirt because he wanted to freak people out and make them notice him, despite having no such belief or homophobic feelings himself, would that make the t-shirt any less offensive?

Obviously, I don't think so. I think it makes the kid an idiot as opposed to a real enemy of ours, but we should treat him like an enemy as a way of showing how idiotic it is to wear the uniform of the enemy. (Btw, to me 'treat him as an enemy' doesn't mean "bust his head with a brick" or anything. I'm a gentle soul.)

ETA: Just to complete that thought: I think that, whether you think the person is wearing the shirt to be a homophobic douche or not, it's important to treat him as one.

I'm coming around to Criostoir's point of view. Let's be real. The only reason why anyone want to profess "straight pride" is to belittle or discount the significance of gay pride. Gay pride means something, especially to people who remember a time when being gay was nothing you were allowed to be proud of.

"Straight pride" on the other hand is a joke at best, and possibly worse.

I have a t-shirt which says "in Japan we are big", and has a drawing of a sumo wrestler. And I'm not even Japanese, lol. That definitely means I hate Japan and sumo wrestlers.

Exactly. ..|

And so is gluttony,

now look at America.

Lust: We have the highest amount of teen pregnancies and abortion rates
Sloth: We often lag behind other countries in our math scores
Wrath: Just look at all the slew of crime committed here
Avarice: Can anyone say recession?
Envy: Scandals galore

What else is knew about America?

We can't spell, either.

I don't find them offensive. But they do seem sorta homophobic. We do the pride thing because we are trying to express ourselves in a culture that promotes hetero-normativity. To live in a culture where it is assumed you are straight until proven gay, it seems redundant and somewhat militant to wear a tee shirt that asserts that you are a member of the majority.

^Maybe you should change your custom title to "Juguete de Jake"... ;)

Its super ignorant. I feel like its no different than wearing something that said "white pride" "christian pride" "male pride" or opposition to any others that have faced persecution or a fight for equality or the right to live simply for who they are.

My father told me that any man who uses his clothes to express his thoughts doesn't have anything worth hearing anyway. *shrugs

I agree with your father, Karen. And I say the same about those punks who doodle on their own flesh to express their thoughts.

(I bet Travisevian wouldn't wear clothes with advertising slogans on them either)
