  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do you consider "straight pride" T-shirts offensive?

I'm against being "proud" of ANYTHING as dumb as race, gender, sexual orientation, etc; You're supposed to be proud of something you've accomplished, or struggled to achieve.

If being gay isn't a choice, then how can you be proud of that?

If you're trying to say that you're not ashamed to be gay, then the true opposite of shame is honor. . .but Gay Honor doesn't sound as catchy, now does it?

This, COMPLETELY. How can you be proud of something that was simply given to you? Being proud of being gay/straight is like being proud of having two hands, or being proud of eating food. That being said, I find those shirts funny, I don't even think those straight guys are actually "proud", it's just some form of parody.

:Personally, I find both Gay and Straight Pride
Tee Shirts silly and unnecessary.

But if gay people can walk around shouting to the
mountain tops about how proud they are to suck
a cock, then I see nothing wrong with a Tee Shirt
proclaiming one's straightness.

Double Standards much?

Well you would say that wouldn't you! As a bisexual, presumably you can "pass".

I can only add that as someone who has never possessed a pride shirt or anything else of the sort, it was a liitle weird when my kids got fascinated with rainbows and wanted to put the everywhere. I ruled the car off-limits.

The T-Shirt by itself doesn't offend me. But you know the type of people who would wear such a shirt are probably homophobic...so yes, the end result is usually= me offended.

Because being "proud" takes on a whole new meaning when it comes to LGBTs. In a society that tells us that we are sinners and we shouldn't love ourselves and people are embarassed and ashamed of us, it makes perfect sense.

People don't go around telling people that they should be ashamed to be straight or have green eyes or being English.

It's about telling people that you love yourself no matter what others say. No matter if they tell you that you are going to hell and are an embarassment. It's about coming out of the closet and living your life with pride and respect. Not hiding to make others proud for what they want you to be.

So to me pride = respecting and loving yourself.

And I am having trouble believing that LGBT's can't see it or understand it. lol

^^ What I would have said if I had Elvin's eloquence and sophistication:=D::=D:

People who are making the false equivalency between gay pride and straight pride are carrying water for the right-wing homophobes.

No one has ever tried to make people feel ashamed of being straight. (Well, OK, maybe someone has, but it's never been anything like a social movement.) In this context 'Pride' means "lack of shame," not pride in the sense that I'm proud of my creative achievements.

You can't just compare words. They're not in parallel cases.

Just as 'white pride' really means "hate people of color," 'straight pride' really means "hate queers." If you're not offended by it, it's because you lack the consciousness to be, not because the message intended isn't offensive.

And what does it mean to "be offended" by these, anyway? I don't think they should be banned. I believe in free speech. I also believe in freedom of association and opinion, though: I won't associate with anyone who wears one of these, and I think they're homophobic shitheads.

But that's also approximately what I think of people who wear t-shirts that say "God Hates Fags." These shirts are slightly subtler, but their underlying message is exactly the same.

I completely agree Elvin!

To the op, it's not offensive, it is tacky and stupid though.

yeah ans add a ton

where da BISEXUAL PRIDE TEASHIRT?

make it all nice ans 3somes like

You won't find me wearing this shirt. I don't need the drama of people assuming that I'm broadcasting how proud I am of being only "half gay" or some bullshit. I'm almost positive that is how such a shirt would be perceived by the majority.

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean that he wants to or does.

Which means that "straight pride" t-shirts are very useful for us--they give us fair warning to avoid anyone wearing one. ..|

Again, there's no need to twist the meaning of a word simply to say that you're not ashamed of yourself.

If you've lived in the closet for years, and then finally came out and began seriously dating someone, etc. . .then yes, you have every right to be proud of that, because you've accomplished something that took a lot of bravery to do.

But you can't be proud of being gay itself, since again: It isn't a choice. Gay people send a completely contradictory message when they say they're proud of the hand life dealt to them.

Oh? Straight people aren't racist?

http://laist.com/2009/11/24/kick_a_ginger_day_spawned_at_least.php

Now, if a ginger stood up for himself and said that he was no longer ashamed to be redheaded, or his freckles. . .that would be great. But it wouldn't make sense to be proud of his genetics.

Nomenclature, 'pride' is being used in a special sense here. Politically, it generally means "refusal to act ashamed."

Words don't mean the same thing in every context. Politics (which this is) is notorious for giving special meanings to words.

Straight pride is almost as bad as White pride, unless it's supposed to be a self parody.

So gathering from the posts here, Gay pride is about celebrating being out and open about being LGBT, not about being born gay. Racial (non white) pride (which is probably mostly part of the Gay pride parade) is about celebrating your own culture living in a white dominant society like Canada, US, UK, Australia... Okay, I'll take that.

:D Has goodins out there ans hope ya culture no go more loonys

Straight pride? There's no courage involved in the announcement that one is straight. It's meant as a slap in the face to gays and expresses homophobia. People, people, people, it helps knowing who the enemy is. This is not a benign saying. Just like white power was usurped from black power, so, too, was this usurped. Sad, really, when the dominant culture is so afraid of minorities saying they've had enough.

It's totally fucking homophobic and offensive. Yadda yadda ya. Heterosexism etc. People have already covered why and if you don't get it you don't look at things deeply enough. There is no need for the majority to "defend" themselves by making it known that they aren't ashamed. Our entire society is perpetuated by their ideology. They aren't marginalized like we are: those t-shirts translate to, I'm proud to be straight because I'm not a faggot.
