Do you eat crawfish?

No, disgusting.

I don't mess with ANYTHING that comes from water. And I don't want to eat anything that I have to actually CRACK open to get to the meat. Yuck!

:p

I have a few times, and they're somewhat lobster-like.

Mostly I remember catching and using them as fish bait, when I was a kid.

OK.....Louisiana boy here ... let me tell y'all the REAL DEAL ...

Awesome critters!!!!!! Tasty and fun, fun, fun to eat at crawfish parties!

Crawfish live in shallow waters like ponds and rice paddies ... in fact rice farmers in Louisiana will often cultivate crawfish in the rice ponds as a second cash crop ....

When I was a kid, we would go crawfishing almost every weekend from February to late May .... you use a rectangular net held on the 4 corners by what looks like metal clothes hangers coming to a point above the middle of the net about 18 inches tall ...

a chicken neck or hot dog is tied to the middle of the net to attract the mud bugs (another name we call them) ... and dozens of nets are put out either by using a long pole to place them just off shore, or if you have a pirogue (kind of cajun dug out canoe) or boat, place them in the water on a line you can attend to over a period of a few hours ..

you can also use waders (rubber suit to keep you dry while wading into the shallow water) and sit on a log while you drink beer and wait for the traps to fill ..

every 20 minutes or so you "run the line" ... that is, you visit each net (or trap) and pick it up out of the water ... this causes the bottom to sag a few inches which keeps the crawfish in the net instead of falling back into the water.... you tip the trap into an ice chest to collect your growing abundance of crawfish ...

place the net back into the water (the bait should last quite a while, as the crawfish don't eat very fast and each piece may last all day if you're lucky) ... after the line has been run ... you sit back and drink more beer ... usually a can of beer per run works for me

after a few hours you're buzzed (beer and/or weed), well sun tanned, and you've got a few ice chests of crawdads ... usually about 100 pounds is needed for a reasonable carport party

when you get home (hopefully without mishap or DUI) ... you wash the crawfish in a large round galvanized washtub with some salt added (1/4 to 1/2 a box of table salt to 20 or 30 gallons of water) to make the little critters vomit ... we call this "purging" .. it cleans out their guts ... we're going to eat the whole thing, remember?

they stay in the salted water for about 10 minutes and then into freash water for another 10 or 15 and then into a large basket which will be lowered into a large boiling pot of water .. this is the crawfish boiler ... lots of delicious spices are added ... along with corn on the cob and small potatoes ... and some people add other things like sausage and mushrooms....

after a few minutes they are ready to be eaten ... and YUMMM .... are they good ... and they smell great cooking, too ... this is a family ritual repeated thousands of times all over south Louisiana every wekend for 2 or 3 months.....

i wish y'all could understand how delicious they are, and how much fun we have enjoying them.... if any of you ever visit Louisiana in the springtime, i'll invite you to a good ole crawfisb boil..... y'all come on down!!

short video of how it's done>>>

Awesome post, spooger. I've been dreaming of a Louisiana visit for years now, though sadly it's not imminent beneath other priorities. :(

How do you pronounce pirogue?

I am curious to tasting them, but not opening them up.

Just do it! Suck their fucking brains out! Splatter their guts all over yourself.

I know you can.

You can wuss out and buy already cooked tail meat but none of us will ever respect you ever in any way from now on until you die alone and are forgotten.

Your choice.
