I was watching either the Tour de France or maybe a football show and an athlete said he liked working out. It struck me as odd because even though I have been lifting weights for years, I don't like it. I like to cycle, but when I ride as exercise its not as enjoyable. So I was wondering (assuming you do exercise) whether you enjoy it or do it because its healthy and/or keeps you looking and feeling as you want. I personally do it because I like to have a nice body.

This isn't about exercise as much as it is about the psychology of why we work out.

I do it so I won't become fat.
For some reason I tend to gain weight very quickly. ;_;

If I am just starting up after not working out for a while, then I usually don't enjoy it. If I am in the habit if working out already, then I usually enjoy it.

I find that the psychological benefit of having a set regimen to fulfil is extremely satisfying, and a nice way to break up my day from what are otherwise rather still and sedentary pursuits (my hobbies are principally academic or literary in nature, and involve alot of sitting down :) ).

I dislike gyms or exercising in the company of others; for me it is a solitary pursuit, and one I conduct exclusively for my own benefit. The hardest thing is always starting; once a rhythm has been established, it becomes rather enjoyable.

Hate it. It's like work, but you don't get any money. But I do like how I feel when I'm done... I just have a hard time remember what that feeling is like, so I can't use it to goad myself into going to the gym. Perhaps if there were more hotties to look at...

If I wouldn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it. Going to work is already one thing in my life I don't enjoy, but have to do. Why would I do another thing I don't enjoy. If I had the time I would work-out much more often.

It depends what mood I'm in.

Some days I just really hate it and don't want to be in the gym and other times I like it, but I like the results I see so I try not to slip up too much.

5 x's a week... usually for about 1-2 hours... and i hate it. the only high-point is checking out the occasional hottie in the showers next to me.

I'll give a casual yes. Sometimes, yeah, I'd rather sit and play video games or something. But most of the time, I enjoy my workout. Today is my day off, so I thought I'd take it kinda easy. Ended up working out for over an hour. Just enjoyed it too much to stop, I guess. I do enjoy shuffling through all my songs on my iPod while I work out, too - fun to hear things I haven't heard in a while (or ever).

Thank you for your responses. Its interesting that working out for me is actually much worse than going to work but better than going to church. The worst part of going to work for me is getting up, getting ready and getting there. Once I am there I tend to enjoy my work and the people. With exercise I hate waking up knowing its a workout day but I also hate the actual exercise. And I usually only lift weights for about 25 minutes. I would have given up years ago if I worked out for an hour.

I like it. I usually work out at the fitness room at work, and we have a great view of the mountains plus there are some nice pieces of eye candy there (although I strictly follow the rule of not dipping the pen in the company ink! :) )

Most of the time it's a drag. I do it to stay in shape. I do like the runner's high or the pump when I'm lifting weights. You get some good music going and you get into it --those times are fun.

I like exercising. It's puzzle-solving for me. I'm trying to solve my body--constantly trying to make my body more defined, more flexible, leaner, stronger. I hope that if I live to be seventy, eighty, or older, I'll continue to be physically active.

Too, I often feel almost boundless energy inside me, so exercising helps me to outlet some of that energy. And I agree with Icarus512 that exercising is a good way to cope with stress.

Because I work-out at a gym, I also experience a couple of other concomitant pleasures: listening to a couple of hours of music, and looking at the other guys who're in there hauling ass.

I gotta admit though, that sometimes I struggle to get off my ass and get in there. That's usually my cue that I need to take a day off, or do a workout-lite.

Yes, I enjoy working out.

I work (job wise) out of my home, I spend a lot of time at home. Working out at the gym not only forcees me to get out of my home, I just feel better after a good workout. I just put my ipod on and focus on my workout.

When I start exercising I absolutely hate it. It takes me a bit to get into a "rhythm", but once I get into it I'm okay.
When I finish up I feel pretty good.

I've worked out my entire life and I still absolutely hate it. It's up there w/ visiting the dentist. It's just another thing on my to do list that fits into my jam packed schedule. I do it b/c I'm a hyper person and it's noticeable when I don't run off the excess energy. But no, working out doesn't seem to release any endorphins for me. I don't feel spectacular afterward either. Maybe that's b/c I'm always happy anyway. It also doesn't help w/ my stress. Nope.

I really enjoy biking, whether it's on the road or in the woods. The workout you get from mountain biking is great, and is all part of the fun ..|.
