Do you ever feel "hip"?

Yea I've always wanted to be "hip" as they say. However now I think I felt more hip being pretentiously hip then I do actually do being "hip" which to me means being a working artist, a musician or an enthusiast of any of those sorts.

I never hold myself to a higher standard than others. If I do, they really must be a deadbeat.

I despise a hoity-toity elitist attitude.

p.s.: the steve urkel glasses must go...

Urban Dictionary says hip and hep have been used from the 1940s. I'm sure I heard Sidney Poitier use 'hip' in 'Paris Blues' which was late 50s. People wore low-waisted hipster pants in my country in the 60s.

yes, they certainly did, and,

I suspect even before that...

A case of old meeting new: An Aboriginal man stands in traditional dress with
a cell phone clipped to his loincloth.

I swear I made another post about my aboriginal man with the cell phone

and him not being able to get his friends to come to the party...
a feeble stab at humour, but did it just disappear or did I mispost
scary thing senility.

Hip = Sophisticated? :confused:

I doubt that hip necessarily equals sophisticated or vice versa. Not mutually exclusive, to be sure, but I expect many of us know very sophisticated people who are completely unhip, as well as hip people who are pretty unsophisticated. Moreover, most of the sophisticated people I know are uninterested in being hip, and the hip people I know are either uninteresed in being sophisticated or think they are but aren't. I can think of exceptions, but I don't know many. I'm notoriously unhip (or so I like to believe), so perhaps that's the reason.

However, I met a woman today in her 90's who was as sharp as a tack, smart, witty and engaging, in a chrome yellow jacket, black leotard and lipstick red shoes, who raised her foot to her head ("I'm always putting my foot in my mouth" she said, demonstrating her yoga skills.) as she recounted her experiences at Bayreuth last year, her opinion of the big Leonardo show in London, and her appraisal of Sergio Marchionne's leadership of FIAT. Hip and sophisticated and throughly amazing.
