Do You Feel Guilty Owning A Car?

yeah actually i do feel guilty about it. so i try to make up for it in as many other ways as i can. i've seen the point source emissions data from a new power plant in silicone valley (from a few years ago), turns out emissions from cars was worse that what the power plant was putting out. so yeah i feel bad about it.

I don't have a car anymore. I sold it before I moved to a larger city where owning a car is like bringing a hairdryer to the desert.

And if I ever get a new car I get a small one, but only if I would actually need it.

No guilt at all. I use unleaded petrol for a cleaner environment. Still i must admit, some people do feel guilty, like my friend who lives in the uk who refuses to get a car because he doesnt want to pollute the world. I said go plant more trees.

Once the government stops investing in Highways, and develops a better public transportation system, I'll stop driving. Otherwise, have you had to walk several blocks in -30 degrees celsius and then wait 5-15 mins for a bus...? Ottawa's urban planning is awful, and it's not a convenient city to get around in (by car, by bus or by bike!) But at least I can stay warm in my car.

It actually costs me less to drive (when I drive) than to take the bus. If we had a metro system, and more railroads, then maybe, just maybe, we may be able to see a great reduction in emissions.

I do however think that it's up to us to lobby our governments for change... So I guess you just saw Who Killed the Electric Car?

I just watched An Inconvenient Truth yesterday. Although I'm not going to run out and sell my SUV, it was a fairly good documentary. Even though it was amusing to see Al Gore riding in back of gas guzzling limos, driving luxury cars, and riding in gas guzzling jets to travel all over the world.

I'd love to drive an alternate fuel vehicle. But I also want choices, and the automakers just aren't offering much. And I drive much less than the average American, so even with my guzzling SUV, I'm burning less gas than the rest.

I've got a pretty old car, but I keep it well-maintained. Also, I live pretty close to work, so I tend to walk to work most days (except recently - sorry, just too damn cold). I do drive one day a week to get errands done, and to and from Job #2 another day a week, but can't say as I feel guilty about it.

I don't feel guilty at all. I'm not going to walk 15 damn miles to work every day.

I don't feel guilty about owning a car. I worked for it, I earned it and it's one of the most fuel efficent cars out there - the Toyota Prius.

Do I think people are wasteful and take things like their own transportation for granted? Of course I do. We're all guilty of such thinks and event he smallest amount of changing such behavior can end up making a difference.

What I firmly believe is that Americans (individuals and corporations) should be charged/taxed for the pollution they put into the environment. If we really were held accountable for our actions in such a way I think people would think twice about buying a Hummer or using the car to travel around the block.

No. I've reduced my driving to 100 miles a month.
I walk to work 2X a week and I have my canvas bag when going to the market.

Maybe King George W could save a bit by stopping the joy-riding on Airforce One.

Just a thought....

We already are. Vehicles with inefficient mileage require more gas, which means more money and tax is being payed at the pump. Charging additional tax on top of tax seems rather un-American, and probably wouldn't do much for the environment. It would add more corruption in the government as the extra taxes wouldn't likely be spent appropriately on the environment. Now if someone could guarantee that my tax money would be spent on helping our environment, then I would gladly pay extra.

And still, here on JUB, there are JUBbers boasting "I've got a big /green/eco-friendly/hybrid/saving the planet vehicle"

Time for these polluters of the the planet to get on their bikes.[-X

I don't feel guilty at all for using my car.

I live in Los Angeles and having a car is essentially the only way to get around. Literally, if you want to go somewhere or do something you need a car. But we're not just mindlessly polluting the world with no sense of responsibility. California has some of the toughest and highest laws about pollution regulation in the world.

Those who don't have cars can use the bus but I don't think it's a very good system.

Of course, though. I feel that new developments in the automobile sector and alternative fuels are top priority for the nation.

^Sh*t!

I lived in LA 2 years without a car just fine. Using the bus and the subway.

And, I'm getting by here in Portland, OR the same way.

Do you guys have any idea how much money you would save, not paying for repairs, gas, car washes, license, insurance, etc.?

And, how much better you'd be treating the planet?

When you state that you live in LA for 2 year I take it you mean the city itself right because anyone who lives in Los Angeles County usually state that they live in LA it easiert then saying that Oh I live in La Mirada, Whittier,Glendale, Inglewood .......

Because those who don't live arouind here usually react with where that so its is usually easier to say Oh I live in LA. Now the problem is that Los Angeles the county and everything is so spread out that most time PT is going to be a pain in the ass.

I usually try to get jobs as close to where I live as possible. But I don't think most people want to give up their car on the count that it gives them that feel of independence

OK, I guarantee you didn't live in Torrance. Or outside the "city" itself.

Say I want to go to West Hollywood. It would take me far longer by bus than it does by car, with numerous transfers.
There are NO train stations anywhere near me, I'd have to take bus just to get to the nearest one, and no train would take me right into Weho.

Then, I'd have to watch the time, because I'd have to be able to catch the last BUS out of there at night.

Please, I challenge anyone to live in the greater LA area to say they wouldn't mind being without their car.

:-)

I feel guilty that I sometimes don't see my car for a week (will it feel neglected?) It's usually faster for me to walk or use my bike for local shopping, chores and visiting nearby friends.
I am also fortunate to work mostly from home and live a two minute walk to a regional rail line. By train I can get to center city in 20 minutes, the airport in as little as 40 minutes and cities like DC and New York in less than 2 hours....all while catching up on my reading. Does this sound like I feel guilty or that I'm bragging?
