I honestly don't know how to react to this, am I too sensitive, or is it actually rather vulgar?

I don't intend for this thread to start any hate/drama/flame, I honestly don't, if this topic does happen to be too sensitive of an issue, I'll immediately tell an Admin to close this topic.

I'm just saying, from a world of stereotypes (Readers, please don't get offended)
but today if I said:
"Most of the contestants at the math team were black, so it wasn't hard to beat them"
Would this be considered racist?

he just shouldnt make jokes,

one thing about humor is you have to be natually cool,

and obama is not that, really without his looks and his voice, obama would be steve urkle all day.

Would Saying:
"Most of the contestants at the math team were black, so it wasn't hard to beat them"
Be racist then?

It's pretty much the same thing :-O

No it's not the same thing. When dealing with physical characteristics, the facts will be finite. When dealing with mental capabilities, so much more comes into play. A persons ability to learn and demonstrate their education is not based on race. For the same reason that all asians aren't math genious, not all black people are ignorant in math as your example implies. Your example is flawed by making a claim that blacks are somehow inferior mentally, and for that it becomes rascist. Case closed.

You have a native Hawaiian making a joke about why a school from his state pulled off an outstanding victory in a sport where height is important and the kids are just a bit shorter than usual. It was actually a pretty good joke unless you're a PC idiot who has to have everything unrealistically equal.

Now, if they were discussing a math contest and had he made a joke about how Asian kids were expected to do well when it comes to math, you could argue that it was racist. But then I'm from California where the various Asian groups are pretty much tired of being expected to perform better just because they're Asian (just as blacks are tired of being relegated to basketball teams). Yeesh...

The problem is that there is no clear definition for racism even though most of us like to bandy the word about. It is not science. However, one could make a case for insensitive. I hope we can stop being so thin skinned all of us. When you go out looking for something, we often see what we want to see.

I'll defer to the judgment of our asian members on this question.

Some stereotypes actually are true... no saying they are right 100% and we can't generalize.. but some do have some truth to them. Alot of gays like pop/disco, Mexicans eat tortillas with alot of their meals and mow lawns as a side job, (I was one of those growing up I cut many lawns) Many black americans like chicken, asians many times ARE short. I fit alot of stereotypes as a mexican and as a gay man. If someone makes a stereotype.. I have no reason to be offended.. because its true. That's how I see it. Some stereotypes aren't really harmful at all. Like the chicken thing associated with black americans... Is it bad to like chicken? No not really.. and it goes back to slavery days and the history of soul food. I'm not black (though a part of me wishes I was) but damn I LOVE chicken myself. And thats not a bad thing. Things have some truth to them for a reason. Some gay guy I knew was pissed because someone said "oh you're gay... so have you seen a Streisand concert?" He said that was offensive. I said but don't you have every album of hers?

Is it racist to say:

"Generally, individuals who are of European-ancestry have lighter hair colour."?

To me it doesn't mean that you have to be "colour-blind" to escape racism.

To me, racism occurs when you use race as a measurement to variables that have no direct correlation to the genetics of a race.

It is not vulgar or racist and only the most stoic self righteous people would be offended by it.

No. He said generally. If you look at statistics, generally Asian people are shorter. That's just a common characteristic of Asian people, he didn't say all of them. I'm sure at some point he's seen Yao Ming.

To put your words in perspective:

No. He said generally. If you look at statistics, generally Black people have lower IQs. That's just a common characteristic of Black people, he didn't say all of them. I'm sure at some point he's seen Oprah.

No but you just know rareboy is already mounting the online petition while wiping away soft tears.

Though I agree; with so many pissy people out there, he just shouldn't make joke. It'll always get turned against hiim.

Though I really like the guy; he just has a cool vibe about him. Confident, commanding and yet completely relaxed. It's interesting.

There's a difference between physical characteristics and intellectual ones. You can attribute IQ to social factors in the lives of individual people, but you can't say that about height, even in famine-ridden countries people grow to a convergent average height.
