  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do you generally read a whole thread or just the first post?

I've noticed that sometimes when people respond to a post it's evident that they didn't read the whole thread because the OP might have given additional information that would render the responders post redundant or irrelevant.

I read through most threads partly because of OCD and partly because it usually gives me a better idea of how to respond to the thread.

What about all of you?

I don't even read the first post. I just assume from the title that OP is talking about this and that and he's probably not going to mention me until I mention myself.

It's just polite!

Yeah, it's not just OCD. It's upbringing, too. If I don't listen politely to what everybody else has to say before I pipe up, my mama slaps me upside the head. Figuratively, at least.

It does tend to produce somewhat better communication, as you've noticed.

I guess what I'm saying is there are times when a thread might be about a TV show that I'm watching and I have to go back and read the whole thing (like the Big Brother thread) even though the thread might have 20 pages, just so that I understand where everyone is coming from, but also because of a compulsion to.

Ah, but do you read them "forwards" or "backwards" or kinda some of each? You can get a totally different meaning by how you read them. Especially the tangents.

Well in the example I gave, I might start at page 20, but then feel the need to start reading the thread from the beginning to the last received post.

Agreed. A substantial amount of forum drama can be cut down if people read and take in the whole conversation, instead of just jumping in a thread with comments a-blazing.

Oh, I see. Then no. I just start from a few pages back to familiarize myself with the topic that members are currently discussing.

Yeah, I think that's more of a normal response, Girlesque.

The only thing you miss are the silly fights that have since resolved. Although if those fights come back, then you might not know why right away.

Depends on the thread.

If it's a simply "answer my question" thread, then no. I could care less what someone named their dick in the 2nd grade. I'll just post my reply and up my count.

If the thread is more conversational in nature, I'll read through, add my take, or voice my dissent with what ever I disagree.

If the thread is obvious troll bait, I eat my :corn: and :rotflmao:

I read the whole thread and fact/source check if it is in CE&P. I read the whole thread if it is in COR&BT (I just try to believe the OP). Others I just sort of skim.

For some threads, I read all the posts. For long threads, I read the OP and then skim through, looking for any posts to reply.

I read the whole thread because if I want to comment I don't want to repeat what someone else has said already.

I READ a whole lot more than I POST.
