I don't think a play party is really a sex party as such (though of course sex may happen there). With a real sex party, people who don't want to have sex with new-met partners find it pointless to attend, and are probably not welcome. It's not OK to just watch.
I haven't been to a play party, but from people who have (including Jasun), there are ways to participate that don't involve giving, taking, or even handling dick; and it sounds like just being there and part of the atmosphere is OK too. (I assume that being a disapproving buzzkill would get you kicked to the curb, of course, but I have the impression* that an appropriately-dressed smouldering leatherguy who never touches anyone else, and perhaps never speaks, would not be an unwelcome presence.)

1000 times more guys would visit parties, back rooms, cruising places for guys, etc... if they were sure there was no risk. The gay commmunity should require everybody to be carefull at all times about health issues and to remain clean
