Do you have a coin jar?

I spend my change and rarely have more than a few dollars of it in a dish on my dresser...never leave without putting it into my pocket. I just don't see a point in accumulating it.

I do keep quarters in my car for tolls and meters...not like I'm saving them tho. However, I am saving wheat pennies...a few hundred of them at least, but they'll never be worth much in my lifetime.

Haven't noticed one of these "Coinstar" machines at my local store, but I will check again next time. And my bank has no such machine.

They have them in my area, and I often see people using them. According to their website , they charge 9.8 cents on the dollar...seems like a lot. There is a search feature on their site to enter your zip and see if they have any in your location

Have you seen Gilbert Grape's mom? ;)

You will be putting over 700 lbs. in the middle of the room. Can your floor/structure take that - for how long before it starts sagging?

Thankfully the weight is not a problem, they are setting in my lower level family room on a concrete/tile floor. I have moved them on occasion to clean the floor under them. I use a moving dolly and have never seen any stress cracks or anything. they're not actually water bottles but brewers carboys, (I was a home brewer for 15 years) the glass is a bit thicker.
I said "water bottles" because I didn't think most people would know what a carboy is, and the difference isn't really worth looking up.

I've been tossing my change in 5 gallon water bottles for years. I've never cashed any in because I'm saving to make a coffee table from them. 4 5 gallon carboys full of change, black rubber stoppers, with a glass top. So far I've got 3 and about 1/3 of the last one.

My brother had a glass 5 gal water bottle filled with coins...went to pick it up and move it one time and the bottom broke. what a mess...smashed glass and coins all mixed together.

edit to add...I see your recent post above. good thinking to lift them from beneath. ..|

I have a jar for each denomination. Quarters are used for laundry and everything else gets rolled up whenever I'm especially broke.

I do but overtime I got to the bank to have them changed. I try to use my coin more often these days esp buying groceries.

I actually thought about starting a thread about this very thing before. When we first started living together, I notice the greek throwing his pocket change in a dresser drawer. When I asked him why, he said he hated caring change. I did too, but like an idiot, I just kept carrying it. So, I began throwing my coins in the drawer, too. One day, he pulled the drawer out and it spilled all over the bedroom floor. I think we were picking up change for months. We got this big heavy glass jar and kept the coins in it. When it was half full, it was almost too heavy to carry. It was over 300 dollars. So, we took our friends out to dinner.

We still have a money jar. We also have a 3 year old son. One day, I watched as he took handsful of coins from the jar and into another room. Finally, I checked to see what he was doing. He was placing two small piles of coins on each step going upstairs. We have a 3 level house...that's a lot of steps.

I used to (or my family did before I moved out). I should start doing it again since i have so many loose coins. I generally try and stay away from handling coins while paying cash so I end up with all these coins from the change.

I have a Homer Simpson beer mug I keep my loose change in although I rarely ever use cash these days.

If you go to Coinstar and put your money towards a gift card they don't take a fee. They have Amazon gift cards which sells a huge variety of things.

Yep! I have a tin where I put all my change. Every once in a while, I roll it up and cash it. I usually rake in a nice amount of cash. I have a lot of pennies in there though... I should probably cash those in before it's too late lol

We have 2- 5/gal water bottles full of .25/.10/.05 full to top and a lrg kitty littler container being filled now w/ all loose change, and any N all 1.00/5.00/10.00 bills.

We save it up all yr long and then use it on vac trips....

Last time we cashed it all in we had almost 1400.00

Our coin jar is a pickle/sauerkraut crock that my grandparents supposedly brought with them when they emigrated from Europe to the US. I never use change. I empty my pockets and throw whatever money, including bills, into the crock. I have used the contents for travel.

Yes lose change goes into the coffee can each day. In December cash the coins in and head the casino at Boonville MO.
