  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do you have a favourite hymn?

Yeah, my 12 years of Catholic Education is useful now!!! Say what you want about Catholicism, some great music...

No joke, it is the only reason I actually like going back to Church. My hometown for its size. has a big congregation. They can do 5 masses a weekend.

How Great Thou Art is tops for me. Like The Old Rugged Cross and Amazing Grace, too.

John Wesley founded The Methodist Church. His older brother, Charles, was Queen Victoria's Chaplain (Anglican, of course).

In order to help his little brother promote his new church, Charles would write "more appropriate" lyrics to the day's popular music, thus "creating" many of what we consider Hymns, to this very day.

A lot of the tunes were well known "drinking songs". However, the more "upscale" melodies, what we now know as The Classics, were also adapted.

One of my very favorites was "borrowed" from Beethoven. (Though I'm not absolutely sure that Charles Wesley was the original lyricist, it wouldn't surprise me if he was.)

Here is a more recent arrangement. The "Hymn" is still immensely Popular to this day!

PeTe is my favourite "him"! :D

Oh wait, you meant song, right? (hehehe)

I think that would be the little RC dittie, "On Eagle's Wings"

But PeTe is still my favourite "him"! Love ya' PeTe! :D

Many of you have mentioned "Amazing Grace", which, without doubt, is one of the most Powerful Hymns ever written! You might be surprised that it's author was a former slave trader.

I've spent the last few hours on YouTube, trying to find an arrangement, out of Thousands, that would accurately represent the Simplicity, and yet Force, of this Truly AMAZING Hymn. From full orchestral treatment, to only bagpipes, to astounding solos, to acapella renditions, this is what I finally came up with to give it an "almost, but not quite" FULL representation.

Not (yet) considered a Hymn, per se, but it could be! (o)

The Navy Hymn I am most familiar with after all these years on the water.

I like many listed above along with Stand By Me, which is a pop tune but adopted from the hymnal.

Pipe organ hymns always sort of get my blood curdling ...

^Oh jeez, I remember being a eucharistic minister at the 730AM mass and having to orate that hymn. It was a favorite of my priest. Never really liked it.

Here's another of my favorite hymns...

I had to learn how to sing this in religious education class for when I made my First Holy Communion in 1971. I still know all the words...

Though it is not considered a Hymn, per se, this is a (very short) rendition of something that I've sung countless times.
